Tightening my grip on Lucy as we were pulled through foliage, I tried to break free. But it was impossible. The invisible beings were just too strong. Eventually we were pulled into a clearing where we were dropped harshly onto the ground. I scrambled to pull Lucy closer to me. She pulled out her knife, but it was tossed aside.
"What the fuck do you want with us?!" I demanded, squeezing Lucy.
"There is no escape," A low, gravely voice growled.
"Well put," another voice said.
"Scary."
"What are you?" Lucy asked, moving closer to me.
"We are terrifying invisible beasts," the first voice answered.
"If you could see us, you would be really intimidated," another voice growled behind us, making me flinch. The other voices echoed their agreement.
"Uh, you forgot to mention that we are very large!" one retorted.
"Well what in Aslan's name do you want?" I glared.
"You. Or rather, your sister,"
"You'll do what we ask," a voice said, addressing Lucy.
"She will."
"Very clever."
"Well put."
"Yeah."
I frowned, helping Lucy stand. While these creatures tried to seem threatening, they were too dorky to make me fear for my life or Lucy's.
"Or what?" Lucy questioned.
"Or death....."
"Death! Death! Death!" the voices started chanting. I rolled my eyes.
"Well if you kill us, how are you going to use us dumbass?" I demanded.
"I hadn't thought of that."
"No you hadn't."
"Fair point."
"All right, we'll just kill your friends," the first voice said nonchalantly. My breath hitched. Maybe I was wrong about these creatures being harmless.
"Ooooooh," the voices echoed.
"Good idea."
"Yeah."
"What do you want with me?" Lucy spat.
"You will enter the house of the Oppressor," the voice growled, pushing Lucy forward while holding me back.
"What house?" Lucy asked as I struggled.
"This one."
Suddenly, the sound of a door opening echoed through the clearing and the land opened up, revealing stairs and a warm glow of yellow light.
"Upstairs, you'll find the Book of Incantations. Recite the spell that makes the unseen, seen."
"Or else we'll kill your sister!" Another voice said cheerfully.
"Just do it yourselves," I said angrily.
"We can't read."
"We can't write, either, as a matter of fact."
"Or add."
"Yeah."
"Why didn't you just say so?" Lucy asked.
"Beware the Oppressor," they warned.
"He's very oppressive."
I snorted loudly.
