"Daphne!" I called out of the dormitory bathroom for my friend. She poked her head around the doorframe with a friendly face, "Celest, what's wrong?"
"Daph could you help me with my hair, I can't get it right"
In the mirror above the sinks I watched her smile and walk up behind me, she began waving her wand making stands of my hair organise themselves into a pretty half up-do.
We had now been studying at Hogwarts for a week, it was safe to say that things were far different to what we all thought they'd be. Not completely in a bad way, some things were in fact much better than we expected. For example the bonds we had made with our fellow Slytherins were amazing and seemingly unbreakable. Not to mention, even in such a short amount of time we had managed to learn so many new things.
Yesterday we had charms class with Professor Flitwick, he was a tiny man who had to teach the class by standing on a tall pile of books stacked upon his desk, I overheard another student mention he was part elf, which I certainly wouldn't doubt. He had a squeaky voice but father reassured me he was a fine charms professor indeed and that I wasn't to worry.
In our class we learnt the levitation charm, a simple spell that father had taught me before I left. So of course I was the first to complete the task that Flitwick had set us: to get a feather to float in mid air.
"Well would you look at that!" The professor squeaked from atop his tower of novels. "Miss Myradin has mastered the charm!" I proudly lifted my head while keeping my feather afloat with no difficulty. "10 points to Slytherin!" Draco and Blaise patted me on the back and congratulated me.
Every student watched in awe as my pristine feather floated around two feet above the desk, I even had it do a little spin just for fun.
"And Miss Granger! Well done!" I glanced over to Granger who was sat at a desk directly opposite me. She was shooting me daggers with her eyes as if she was angry I had perfected the charm first, if looks could kill I would need to drop my feather and cast a protego right about now, I thought. I sent her a pityfull smile and mouthed "better luck next time" then continued to pay her no mind as she shouted at Weasley for "doing it all wrong".
The particular negatives we had so far come across, that we certainly didn't expect, were small things like how exhausted we all were after a day of classes, especially when we then had to attend a midnight astronomy class and still wake up for classes at nine AM the next morning. It's almost like they wanted us to get no sleep! When discussing such matters in the common room one evening Daphne had complained that she needed her "beauty sleep" to which Theodore Nott, the latest addition to our friendship group, had rather charmingly assured her that she needed no such thing. Her cheeks managed to glow even in the dim lighting of the dungeon and all she managed as a reply was a small giggle.
The second issue to catch us by surprise was the horrific discrimination that Slytherins seemed to be partial to during our time at Hogwarts. On our very first morning on our way to the great hall for breakfast, a group of older Ravenclaws had shouted and called us such things as "baby death eaters" or "slaves to you-know-who". At first we found it rather humerus, but after a couple of days it just got boring and rather inconvenient. Of course, when the attackers realised whom they were attacking they would rather swiftly turn the nearest corner and run away, but it was still annoying in the first place.
A couple of days ago, in between classes two third year Gryffindors had sent Pansy Parkinson, a fellow first year Slytherin, straight to the hospital wing after calling her "Slytherin scum" and striking her with a powerful leg locker curse. Honestly she was rather annoying but that was no excuse. Draco and Theo later informed us that the two third years held accountable were in fact the Weasley twins, two of Ron's many older brothers. Whilst we all sat doing homework around the common room fire they also mentioned how Professor Snape had given them a months detention and deducted 20 house points, each as soon as he had found out what they did to Parkinson.
