boondoggle ; noun : work or activity that is wasteful or pointless but gives the appearance of having value.

a few years ago, maya and i started playing a game where one person would say a word, and the other would have to define it.

it may be sort of a boondoggle, but we do it anyways.

"Maya?" I shout when JJ and I step foot I my house.

I could tell JJ was absolutely astonished by the house.

"In the kitchen!" A voice echoes back.

"I brought a friend!" I shout back as I set my phone and keys on a table.

"Take your shoes off." I whisper to JJ.

"Right." He nods as he takes his old boots off.

"Who's Maya?" JJ asks.

"My nanny." I state, leaving him in the doorway.

"Nanny?" He mumbles to himself.

He collects his thoughts and starts walking behind me.

We walk in the kitchen and I immediately notice Sarah's sister, Wheezie, sitting with my brother, Ben.

"Hey, Wheezie." I smile. Wheezie and Ben were close in age. Sarah and I always shipped them together.

"Who is this?" Maya smiles sweetly. Her brunette hair falls off her shoulders while she washes the dishes.

"JJ Maybank, ma'am." He nods.

"Please, call me Maya." She smiles. "I would shake your hand, but-"

"Oh, that's okay."

"Alright, we're gonna go upstairs." I state.

"Wait, you said Maybank, right?"

"Yes." He sighs. I could tell something shifted when she asked about his last name.

"Luke's kid?"

"Yeah." He sighs.

"Oh, I knew your father. He was a nice kid." She smiles. "Hope he's doing alright."

"He's fine, thanks."

"Okay, now we're going upstairs."

"Ah! I have a word first."

"Maya-"

"Boondoggle."

JJ laughs beside me and I elbow him to stop.

"I've heard it before. Noun. Something about wasting time?"

"Yes. The correct definition is "work or activity that is wasteful or pointless, but gives the appearance of having value." I'll give it to you."

"Thanks, M. Okay, we're going now."

"Okay, I'm going to the store later, if y'all want anything!" She shouts as we walk up the stairs.

When we step foot in my room, JJ immediately gasps.

"Like it?"

"It's amazing." He laughs.

I had white walls. Photos of the Kooks and my family lined the entry hallway. Vines hung from the wall straight ahead, which had my balcony connected to it. I had a queen sized bed in the middle of my wall, and a couch opposite of it.

JJ jumps onto my bed and laughs. "This is amazing."

"Thank you. I used my own money for all of it, I worked hard."

"Sure." He mumbles.

"What?"

I'm sure all of the Pouges thought we were given everything with no work. They would be right, except for me.

If I wanted anything that costs money, I use my own unless offered otherwise.

"You don't even work, do you?" He scoffs.

"JJ, I work at Saulty's Ice Cream Shoppe and Hellmen's Clothing. I have worked at the Ice Cream Shoppe for years."

"Oh."

"I earn every penny I have."I scoff. "The only thing handed to me is this fucking house."

"I'm sorry-"

I start to feel bad about snapping at him so easily.

"It's fine. You didn't know."

JJ's phone lights up with a message notification. Then, it starts ringing.

"JJ, you're phone is ringing."

Kie's name pops up on the screen. Her name has a heart after it.

"Hey, Kie. I'm kinda busy."

"Yeah, it worked out great. It's going well."

I can't hear Kie's voice from the other side. So, I have to just assume what she's saying.

"Yeah, totally."

"Okay, bye."

"What did she want?" I ask softly. I already knew JJ would be protective over Kiara. Especially, if he knows what happened between her and Sarah.

"Uh, she just wanted to know when I'd be back at the Chaeteu."

"Didn't sound like you answered her question." I comment.

He didn't answer. We weren't dating, I could share my thoughts as brutally as I wanted.

"Yeah. She didn't ask about that. I'm not really interested in sharing, anyways."

"Could've said that the first time." I comment.

"Why did you even bring me here?" Hs snaps. "To grill me?"

"Dude, I just wanted to hang out with you."

"I'm not a charity case, Logan. I don't need you bringing me hear so I can see the Kook life."

"That's not-"

"I'm leaving."
