The big Lincoln Navigator barrelled down the slick highway. The falling rain didn't stand a chance to land on the windshield. Elisha frowned, leaving a wake of cursing and finger flipping drivers behind him. He glanced into the rearview mirror and frowned. Those people didn't mean anything to him. They weren't the love of his life, the daughter he couldn't live without, the brother he never knew he had, nor the unborn son he had yet to meet. They didn't matter to him.
Elisha gripped the wheel tighter, leaving his finger imprints in the leather. First, his no-good father tried to ruin his life, then Kevin ran up behind him trying to steal what he had from him. He'd already shot one of them; Elisha was damn sure ready to shot the other. And no matter where the bullet landed, Kevin deserved every little inch of the pain and suffrage Elisha had waiting for him.
The sounds of his ringing phone snapped him from his thoughts. He glanced at it as he drove. The number that scrolled across the screen was familiar. That was Sabrina!
"Sabrina!" Elisha answered. He panted deeply, listening to the background noise on the other end.
"It's not her," Kevin replied. "But by God, she's beautiful when she's sleeping."
"What did you do to her, Kevin," he growled.
Kevin snickered. "What you could never do right."
"Touch her, and I'll break every bone in your fucking body."
"You've got to find me first, Elisha," Kevin spoke. "And dear ole dad wouldn't give me up."
"Tell me where you have my family."
"Family?" Kevin laughed aloud. "A black woman, a black child, and a black man that you call your family. Man, fuck off on that shit."
"Touch them, any one of them, and I will take you back to Captain Alders' in a body bag." Elisha sped out of the way of a car switching lanes. The sound of the vehicle's horn blared in his ears. Though, Kevin's laughter drowned out the screeching horn of the tiny car.
Elisha had to stay focused; he had to listen for the distinctive sounds around Kevin. He couldn't allow the world to get underneath his skin. Pulling over on the side of the road, he parked the SUV and waited. Sabrina, Madeline, and Edward's lives depended on his level-headedness.
Hearing the distant sound of a beep, Elisha smiled. Jonah lied. Kevin wasn't at his father's home. But he was right where he wanted him. He was there for the taking.
"Kevin," Elisha said. "I'm giving you one more chance to tell me where you are."
"Or what, you're gonna cry cause' I ain't playin' fair." Kevin laughed. "You can kiss my entire black ass, cracker."
Elisha chuckled. A smirk pulled his lips. "That's all I needed to hear."
Ending the call, Elisha peeled off the side of the road, splashing mud onto the bottom edges of the SUV and pavement. He saw the exit sign for Kentfield. He only had thirty miles to go. Elisha chuckled. Only thirty miles separated him from his family. Only thirty miles to end all this shit.
