Chapter 8
When I arrived home I was greeted with a surprise.
"Why hello Keira! Today's a lucky day for you!"
Why if only she knew. My head was a whirl of information and half formed theories. I needed to get to the bottom of whatever was going on in school.
"Keira? I have news."
Her voice jolted me out of my chaotic inner battle.
How peculiar, why would anyone be visiting me? This is going to be interesting.
"Keira, meet Mrs Dawnhollow."
At the mention of that name I was plunged into a series of jumbled memories.
The image of a sandy pit flashed before my eyes and a jolt of excitement flashed through me. The words were a mess and didn't make any sense.
"Keira when you strike out with your right don't forget to defend your left side. Form a guard like this" I remember cool hands positioning me just before I felt the sand shift as she launched herself at me.
She.
Who was she?
Her cool voice rang through my head
"Good job Keira. Now lets try again"
Viewing that memory in my head was like trying to squint through a frosted glass. It was blurry but somehow I understood what was happening.
Words ran through my head, not that I could make out what they were. Another language, a chant?
As quickly as they appeared, the memories faded and I was left with a quizzical Mrs Frances and it was then I saw the other woman with her.
I watched her warily. Her name rang a bell. A semi-muted one but a bell no less.
Smiling kindly at me she introduced herself as Mrs Dawnhollow and reached out her hand in a handshake. I had figured out what I was supposed to do after all that time with Cassidy. I reached out my hand and grasped her cool ones firmly.
"Hey I'm Cassidy."
For a moment, a split second, I thought I saw a flash of mingled recognition and horror cloud her pretty blue eyes. As quickly as it appeared, it was gone and replaced with her friendly smile which made her eyes twinkle.
"Keira, Mrs Dawnhollow is here to adopt you. Isn't that fantastic?"
Oh that's what she was here for.
I smiled politely at them and excused myself, feigning lethargy. As I retreated to my room I was gripped with a sudden urge to observe the two of them. Recently I've been very into eavesdropping I noticed. They were running over the details of the adoption and the dates. Mainly admin. Sighing, I realized how paranoid I was getting. I really do over-think stuff too much. I was about to return to my room when I heard one of them say my name. Stopping still in my tracks I strained my ears to pick up what they were saying.
I recognized the soft dulcet tones of Mrs Frances voice as she replied Mrs Dawnhollow.
"Promise me you'll take care of her? She can't remember anything so you'll have to be careful."
"I will. I know Keira. I'm sure I can try my best to help her."
With that Mrs Frances lead her out with a quiet goodbye.
I could feel the frustration start to build up as I ran to my room and shut my door. I just couldn't understand what was going on. That strange flashback, the familiarity of Mrs Dawnhollow. All the frustrations of the this week built up and I buried my face in my pillow. I tried to scream but only a strangled whimper came out. With a tired sigh I drifted off into a fitful sleep.
