Chapter 3
Life at Madison High could be easily described by one word. Routine. Everyday the teachers would be present on the dot, the senior students milling around after classes at the student lounge, the field constantly occupied by obnoxious jocks and their girlfriends who were mainly from the cheer leading squad. And lastly, the canteen food tasted as revolting as ever. So after spending two months at Madison High, I had become pretty accustomed to the systemic, reliable way things happened here. Therefore, when one day the routine gets abruptly disrupted I couldn't help but feel ill at ease.
It was a quarter past eight and our first period teacher, Ms Miller was no where to be seen. It was rather ironic as she stressed upon punctuality in her classes.
"Psst Keira, do you think maybe there's some sort of alien invasion in the school toilets which caused Ms Miller to address by attacking them with her verbal vomit?"
Excuse my language but alien invasion my butt. Sometimes I really question the sanity of my best friend Cassidy.
On my left, my other best friend, Bree burst out in silent giggles when she heard Cassidy's comment.
Her voice shaking with barely suppressed laughter, Ms Miller emphasized the importance of silence in her class even when the teacher was not present, she jokingly replied, "Oh gosh Cassidy, no way. I'm sure she's just handling some admin or something."
"Sigh. You're no fun Bree." Cassidy groaned loudly at her best friends lack of humor.
Always the voice of reason, she was one of the few people who could get Cassidy to quiet down.
After waiting for another five minutes, just as the clock struck eight twenty, Ms Miller barged through the doors and sat down at the table. Evidently flustered, she started roll call, her voice higher than normal.
Bree and I exchanged glances, it was unusual to see Ms Miller lose her cool.
"Well, girls. It appears that we have two new students today. They are waiting outside so i'll appreciate if you give them a nice welcome to our class."
I quickly whispered to Bree, "Wow does she act like that for every student?"
"Nope. Not everyone. That makes me wonder who they are..."
Cassidy remained blissfully oblivious to everything as she rocked back and forth on her chair, humming a tune to herself and tapping her pencil on the table.
Ms Miller straightened her shirt and brushed her mousy brown hair back from her face. Pushing her red-rimmed glasses up she says in an unnaturally high pitched voice, "Ok, you guys can come in."
I giggled. Ms Miller sounded like an excited schoolgirl with a first-time crush.
The doors opened to reveal two boys.
There was silence.
Then, the entire class erupted in a chorus of catcalls mainly from the bolder girls. Amongst that ruckus, Cassidy's evil witch cackle could be easily distinguished. She collapsed in fits of laughter on the table. I never understood the joke. Bree on the other hand casually raised an eyebrow and rested her chin on her folded hands.
I looked at our newcomers and my mind went blank.
To say good-looking was an understatement. They were absolutely stunning.
Two tall boys stood at the doorway. One of them stood nearer the front. He had chocolate brown, almost black, messy hair which flopped into his eyes. He was tall and looked really fit. He was clad in a casual white shirt and jeans. His tan skin looked even better when he wore such a white shirt. The other one was tan as well and had shorter golden blonde hair. His features were clearly visible. His eyes were a piercing shade of light blue. I shivered. He looked...dangerous but familiar.
Actually, they both looked really familiar I just couldn't place my finger on why. I dropped my gaze to the table, I didn't want to seem like I was staring.
Ms Miller looked like she was going to faint. "Well introduce yourself then"
The blonde scoffed and coldly said "Xavier Winters"
The other one jabbed him in the ribs and smiled tentatively, "Sorry about him. Woke up on the wrong side of bed. I'm Lucian Knight."
For some reason I felt a tingle spread through me at the sound of his low smooth voice. I lifted my gaze to meet his eyes. He was sweeping his gaze over the class and gradually our eyes met. I could see confusion cloud his eyes. His eyes displayed a myriad of emotions. Shock, happiness, sadness, longing, and then back to confusion. His eyes burned with such an intensity I felt as if I was getting burnt. At the same time, his eyes were a gorgeous shade of nile green and they were rimmed with an even darker shade of moss green. I felt as if I was floating. Time seemed to stop, it was just me and him.
Ms Miller cleared her throat.
At once, I snapped out of that trance and stared back at my table, my diluted emerald colored eyes wide. I shivered and grabbed a pen at random and held it. Avoiding Bree's quizzical gaze I stared resolutely at my paper.
"Well, lets get started then. Lucian and Xavier you may sit at those two desks at the back." Ms Miller snappily said.
I kept my eyes averted as I felt them brush past to the seats behind me. I fidgeted uncomfortably when I realized that they were just behind me. I could fell his eyes boring into my back but I remained in my position.
Ms Miller then proceeded with the lesson in her usual snappish manner.
Shaking my head I tried my best to focus on the lesson. I must be going mad. It's all Cassidy's fault.
