Chapter Six: Hostile Nature

It's raining today and the village is mostly quiet. No one wants to go out because of the weather. My team, however, is training with me. All three of them groaned about having to go out and train in this weather, but I think it's a fantastic idea. It gives them an opportunity to learn how to effectively carry out battle strategy even when the weather isn't on your side. As much as they may not like it, they have to learn if they want to survive at least half the ninja that are out there.

I've been watching my team for a while now, learning all their mannerisms and quirks. They operate together just fine on a daily basis but we haven't gone on any huge missions yet. I'm a little concerned that y/n will let her temper with Naruto get the best of her. She tolerates his antics but sometimes he takes it too far. He'll get himself in trouble real quick if she's not in an agreeable mood. As for Sasuke, he sits back and watches y/n quite a bit, sometimes forgoing his own training, and is convinced that he has no need to train as hard as the other two because he's 'that much stronger.' That kid really annoys me.

Y/n and Sasuke have gotten quite close lately. It's odd considering that until she came along, he never threw a second glance at anyone. Yet here he is, awkwardly fawning over her like no one can see what's happening. If she sustains an injury, he's right there. If he believes someone is taking her time away from him, he's nearly foaming at the mouth. I've even noticed that in recent days, he follows her.

A large part of me is suspicious that this isn't just a crush. That same part of me is concerned for y/n's wellbeing., because as often as I've been watching Sasuke, I've been watching y/n, too.

And I can safely say she has no idea she's being followed. I'm theorizing that she doesn't even like him as much as he does, or at least I could say that if I knew whether this was a crush or not.

Now, I wouldn't typically get involved in the lives of anyone, but these are my students and their safety is in my hands. I even requested that y/n get switched to my team because I looked at her academy scores and thought she would be a great fit for the team. Now her future, along with Sasuke and Naruto's, is intertwined with mine. I need to set them on their best path, so I decide to go and have a conversation with Sasuke after training. Right now, all three of my students are scattered out in the woods in an attempt to overtake me once again. It's getting a bit too sticky out for my liking though, so I call to my team and end our training for the day.

"You guys are putting in a lot of work. I'm surprised."

They all come to where I'm standing in the field, the sun baring down and threatening one hell of a sunburn.

"What do you mean? I'm working my butt off, sensei!" Naruto wails. He pulls the collar of his jumpsuit from his neck and yanks it outward a few times in a feeble attempt to fan some of his sweat dry.

"You should probably hurry on home and take a shower, Naruto. All that hard work is flying in my direction!"

"I'm not getting any on you, y/n!" He sticks his tongue out at her.

"You're all sweaty, idiot. Shower before you stink."

"Fine," he says, "but you guys stink too!" and he leaves Y/n, Sasuke, and myself with a short hmph.

Sasuke turns to y/n.

"Let's go," He starts walking off when I address him.

"Actually, I need you to stay behind for a minute Sasuke. You're good to go, y/n. See you tomorrow."

He faces me and glares. Y/n doesn't see his face but waves to him.

She smiles and awkwardly waves in my direction. "Okay, sensei! I'll catch up with you later Sasuke!"

As soon as she's out of earshot, Sasuke speaks.

"What is this about?" He snaps.

"I've noticed that you and y/n are close. A lot closer than you seem to get with people. What's up with that?"

He continues to glare at me, his black hair sticky from the humidity of the day. "I don't know what you're talking about, sensei."

He almost growls the last word, sounding angry and repulsed. I think it's time I stop messing around with him and get to the point.

"I know you've been following her. If this is some crush you have, I suggest you don't let it get in the way of your training. And I would also suggest that you prevent yourself from distracting your teammate-"

"What do you care?! She's just your student, maybe you should spend less time worrying about a teenage girl and more time minding your own business. What's going on between y/n and I is OUR business," he yells at me, a rage building up that I didn't expect. "So I suggest you-" he jabs a finger in my direction, "-leave her alone. She's mine."

I- what? That must be it. He thinks I like y/n..

"Sasuke, I don't-"

"I don't want to hear what you have to say. I want you to listen. Y/n is mine. Don't go getting friendly with her, or I will kill you. Your job is to to teach us, to make us stronger. But you're doing a terrible job. I can do so much more, I can be so much stronger," he trails off, turning away from me and gazing upon the path y/n just walked down, then resumes:

"That's why I'm leaving and she's coming with me."
