8 YEARS AFTER RETURNING FROM THE BORDERLANDS

you didn't expect to start your morning off with cold coffee and a file thrown onto your desk. but were you really surprised?

the stack of papers you had just finished filling out rustled from the movement, some moving only mere inches while others flew from the desk entirely. you inwardly groaned at the sight of them fluttering towards the ground, and even more so at the sight of the man over your desk, no trace of guilt on his features.

"to what do i owe the pleasure?" you muttered sarcastically, bringing your cup of coffee up to your lips and swearing under your breath when the cold liquid entered your mouth. you shook your head to get rid of the taste, the clink of glass sounding rather forceful when placed back to its previous spot. you should probably lay back on the caffeine anyways.

the man's eyes flickered between you and the file laid abandoned on the cheap wood of your desk, "we have a suspect."

at that you rose your eyebrows in surprise, leaning back in your chair whilst picking up the cream colored file and flitting through it, "you found evidence?"

"we were able to compile it last night. the warrant was approved this morning."

"good work, rookie." you grinned, amused by the scowl that crossed over his features.

"i'm not a rookie anymore. and plus i've been on this team for as long as you have."

"oh, but it's so much fun to tease you, ya-su-shi." you dragged out the name of your colleague, knowing how much he hated the separation of each syllable. you've been doing it since you met the man in your first weeks of training as an official profiler, and the two of you have been on the same team since graduating from those hellish months. and despite the endless bickering, you both worked well together, like it was natural even as strangers.

"just shut up and get ready. we're heading out in ten minutes." he muttered, though his tone was lost in the content of his sentence.

you spared a glance out the window, a whine escaping your lips at the sight, "in the pouring rain? i just did my hair this morning," despite your complains however, you were already pushing yourself out of your chair and following after your friend. you could protest all you wanted, but such a mundane thing as weather wouldn't stop you from finally arresting a man you've been profiling for nearly four days already.

it didn't take long to gather the rest of your team and pile yourselves into two separate cars, following after one another on the way to where the man was supposedly supposed to be. the rain poured down more heavily as you drove, the layer of fog making it all the more difficult to drive the vehicle. briefly you wondered if chishiya would be okay going home in weather like this. he had a distaste for rain after all.

the car pulled to a stop long before you noticed, your team already piling out with their umbrellas and heading towards the store you parked in front of. you released a weary sigh at the fact that the rain fell down even harder, pulling open your umbrella and following them out of the car.

you were the last to make it outside, stray droplets spraying your cheeks and the wind proving difficult against your umbrella. amidst your struggle to stay covered you almost missed the man running past you, only the fact that he didn't have an umbrella and his apparent hurry urging you to spare him a quick glance. you did a double take, recalling the familiar stature and the brief glimpse of his face you were able to catch.

"arisu?!" you called out, grateful that your words did not die in the roaring winds. he paused, turning back to face you and recognition quickly molded itself into his features. you made sure your team was already inside before catching up to him, covering his body with your umbrella.
