12. ♞ ALLEN SCHWEITZER AND HITLER YOUTH
LATER IN THE COURTYARD, Phoebe and Michael walked side by side, looking for a place to standby and watch the rest of the inmates, a place where they could have a little more privacy and talk things through. They finally decided on leaning on the fence towards the far end of the courtyard, where the inmates didn't usually wander much. They watched as the white inmates and the black inmates began to send each other glares, squaring up to each other as if preparing for tonight. Phoebe placed her hands behind her back, leaning against them as Michael subconsciously copied her actions and also leaned against his hands after putting them behind his back. Phoebe shook her head."This is stupid." Phoebe pointed out. "They're fighting each other, over what? Just their skin color? I mean, I haven't seen any of them do anything to each other for there to be a reason for this stupid fight tonight." Phoebe sneered with a scoff. Michael grinned.
"I guess most of the inmates are stuck in the past." Michael suggested with a shrug. "It was stupid then and it's stupid now." Phoebe nodded.
"You know what else is stupid?" Phoebe questioned with a hint of disappointment in her voice. Michael cocked a brow, expecting her to say something like you are or I am like usual, but instead she frowned and sighed before saying, "My idea to search T-Bag's cell. I shouldn't have suggested it." She said. Michael frowned. He knew she felt guilty for "making them agree" to join him, but he also knew it was really the only way to get what they needed, and it was the perfect excuse as to why they were searching his cell, which was also a perfect way to convince T-Bag that they were interested in his protection. Michael shook his head.
"I told you, it wasn't a stupid idea. It was really the only way for us to get what we need. What's done is done." Michael reassured, his eyes squinted as the sun shifted in the sky and shined a harsh beam of light in his ocean colored eyes. Phoebe grinned.
"Maybe, but now I got us into some dumb feud between the blacks and whites and they want us to fight. You could get hurt." Phoebe stressed, not even thinking about herself in the moment. Michael nodded.
"I could, but you could get hurt, too. You forget that no matter how hard I tried to exclude you from this mess, I still couldn't keep you out of it." Michael said in disappointment. Phoebe crossed her arms.
"Stop trying to blame and guilt yourself for something you had no control over. I told you we're in this together, and if that means fighting or taking big risks, then so be it. I promised to be there for you and Lincoln and I'm a woman of my word." Phoebe said proudly with a smile that Michael wasted no time in mirroring. Michael stood still for a few seconds, simply staring at Phoebe with a smile as if waiting for her to realize something. Phoebe became annoyed and huffed. "What's with the smug smile, Scofield?"
