---Chapter Six---

Cassidy stirred to find her head throbbing as if to explode. Various blankets and clothes draped across her as she lay there snugly beneath it all. Her mouth was so unnaturally dry, that she winced as she breathed in her jagged breaths. She sat up and her head came into contact of the damp tent canvas. Pausing for a second, she felt a nauseous feeling consume her, working its way towards her mouth. Hoping that the feeling would eventually pass, she whimpered as she could feel her stomach churning and crunching.

Cassidy’s pain turned to a newfound anger, gazing upon Daniel’s sleeping form and she wanted to scream at him. But she could not, her mouth was dry and not a word left her lips. Her face scrunched up unpleasantly as she glared at him peacefully sleeping. After a few long glares the angry fire inside of her was doused.

The pain was excruciating but she found a small voice deep inside of her, though at most it was a hoarse whisper. “Daniel, help me.” She kept repeating slowly, but her desperate attempts failed to wake him. Her whispers disintegrated into soundless sobs. Even though she tried to cry, she couldn’t physically cry. She used to cry over little things like a small child, but crying is a sign of weakness. Cassidy was determined not to be weak.

She could feel the cuts on her arms and legs; she could remember the paralysing fear that took over her when she hit the water. She took a deep breath allowing the chill to creep over her. Realization soon dawned on her that Daniel had saved her. She would have no doubt have of drowned if he didn’t dive in after her. The thought of this overwhelmed her and she was desperate for some fresh air.

Silently she got up and left the tent. Wondering to a place where she could see the stars. “How could I have been so stupid?” Cassidy cried out in a faint voice. “It was my one chance and I blew it.” Her hands were on her face and she could feel the heat that radiated from her red face. She moved them away again and looked up at the stars.

I thought that by doing the British Expedition Award, I could have the adventure I’ve always thought I wanted. I dreamed of exploring the world, even if it was the smallest part of it, something different and untainted from what I knew.” She whispered, taking a quick glance up to the stars again. “All my life I’ve worked hard, hoping that one day I would be selected. But it’s over now, the moment is gone.”

Cassidy’s hands crossed her stomach and her nails dug into her sides. “It doesn’t help that I have a self-centred, stuck up, disillusioned, snob, who seems to think that he can do all the heck he likes, as an expedition partner. I don’t know why I got stuck with a person with such an appalling personality. But to think that he was exempted from all the hard work because he was rich.” The anger boiled up inside of her and it was bringing out the ugly side of her.

I can perfectly remember what that damned boy said to me when we first met.” She laughed madly with her inner thoughts. “And to think, that everyone was so surprised, when he turned up to the BEA meetings. He just cockily smiled as he waltzed casually into the room as if he owned it. He sat down next to me and the room hushed from all the gossiping whispers” She loved the next part of the story, made her chuckle each and every time. She knew she sounded crazy but she felt like she was talking to someone.

Hello I’m Daniel Jacobs, son of the multimillionaire Steve Jacobs.” She mimicked mockingly, using his stuck up tone. “And after I replied; “I know perfectly who you are. Your father was on the news the other day, for knocking down an orphanage abroad so he could drill for oil. Not even thinking about what would happen to the children affecter. And if the saying ‘like father, like son’ is anything to go by when judging such a character, then I certainly don’t won’t to acquaint myself with such a person.” Everyone stared at me like I had murdered someone.” She erupted into giggles, loving the memory of the shocked look on his face.

Though Cassidy knew that it was her own fault that she got paired up with Daniel. The leader thought it would be best to pair people of opposites. She sighed deeply and looked up at the constant stars. “I just won’t one thing to be wonderful in my life. That one thing I can remember in death, and say that I once lived.” Her smiles had ceased to exist any longer. Cassidy sat there gazing at the stars, her legs bent to her chest with her arms wrapped loosely around them.

Daniel stood by the tree watching Cassidy as she gazed back up at the stars. He realised her absence earlier and went off in search of her. All of the words she said range true to him. He admitted to himself that he had never heard such an opinion, as most people kept their opinions to themselves. He knew that Cassidy had never intended for him to hear it, so he turned around and headed back so that it remained that way.

Who’s there?” Cassidy called out. Her voice left Daniel fixed in place. There were a few tense moments, but she turned back to gaze at the stars. He let out the breath that he didn’t even know he was holding in and walked away back into the woods.
