---Chapter Four---
“I think I’m dying!” Daniel cried out into the forest. His bitten finger was covered in a sticky red substance. He looked desperately to Cassidy who just stood there not fazed by it all. He staggered towards her, losing his footing a little now and then, and stumbling like a drunk fool. He held out his hand to Cassidy who took one look and laughed.
Cassidy’s finger scooped up some of the red stuff and she popped her finger into her mouth. She laughed a little and looked back at him who had a smile on his face. “Quit fooling around and help me pack everything up.” She picked up the bottle and groaned seeing it was half empty. “And you are buying me some more of this. Stop wasting it!” Daniel chuckled at this and licked his fingers clean of ketchup. Walking away he laughed and he took the sleeping bag down from the tree, folding it up and handing it to Cassidy.
“You were right about the badger. It had sharp ferocious teeth.” Daniel brought his hand up his head, splaying them out like he had claws. He barred his teeth and growled at her. Cassidy gently hit the side of his face, making him blink before she ran away. He growled some more and chased her down. Falling to the floor with a thud, she was pinned down by Daniel. “Just admit that I saved you from your untimely death.” He whispered into her ear.
“Never!” Cassidy retaliated as she struggled against him. After a few futile attempts at escaping she stopped resisting and just stayed still. Daniel noticed this change and was ready for anything that could happen next. “Come closer.” She whispered so softly is could have been mistaken for the wind. He obliged himself, doing as she said. She puckered her lips ready for him, a devilish thought in mind.
As Daniel drew closer, Cassidy built up the contents that were in her mouth. Then she spat on him right at the second where she could hear his heart beat. He recoiled in disgust wiping away her spit. She was smiling evilly, and she was laughing hysterically in her mind. Though in that moment, silence reigned over them.
Daniel got up walking away saying nothing, and pulled his camping rucksack onto his back. Following his lead, Cassidy sat up and dusted the dirt off of her. She stood up grabbing the rucksack and chasing after Daniel who was already walking along the river. “Slow down.” She called out to him as she started to jog after him. After no reply she dared to ask where they were going.
“We have to walk five miles downstream so we can cross the bridge.” Daniel said half-heartedly in a monotone voice. Cassidy huffed, crossing her arms. He turned round to face her expected her to her acting like a stubborn five year old and sit on the ground. But no, she was standing peacefully still awaiting his full attention. She paused for a moment, revelling in his impatience.
“Why walk five when we only need to walk one?” Cassidy claimed what she thought her mind was a logical solution. Daniel paused for a second of consideration on the matter. He was too tired to walk five miles and he could see that there wouldn’t be many hours of sunlight left. It was Cassidy’s impatient sigh that brought him out of his mind.
Daniel nodded his head in confirmation and Cassidy turned and walked upstream. She walked with a bounce in her step and she felt like she was on top of the world. Nothing would be able to swipe the smile off of her face at that moment. She breathed in a large lungful of air, basking in the forest’s woody smell. She felt so at peace here, she sighed in her sweet delight.
Daniel looked at the path of wet stone that was spewed out in front of him. The pattern of them was so irregular and some of the intervals between them were so large that it would be a close one to get across. He looked at the side to see that Cassidy had gone. She was hopping from stone to stone like a small rabbit. His brow creased together and his mind focused on the task at hand.
Daniel held his breath. Jumping from one stone, to another. He thought that trying not to slip on the rocks was like trying not to make jelly wobble, near impossible. He smiled as Cassidy made such a simple thing as stepping stones into a graceful show. He could tell that she will get across with ease. He smirked at his thinking, as he stepped from his stone to the next.
The river was wide however at this point there was a small rapid of a waterfall, where the two embankments were closer together. The place was like a beautiful, oasis of paradise, though he was incapable to appreciate it. Daniel stopped for a second looking where to leap to next. One was closer but smaller, and one was larger but further away. He picked the smaller one knowing that he would miss the larger one.
Daniel jumped the weight increasing in his stomach. Though he made it and he became more confident with each step. He now began to take larger risky steps to catch up with Cassidy. It wasn’t too difficult to catch her up. She was taking a lot more time than him to think about each step. Daniel stood patiently behind her. Though as she jumped, she could feel his presence behind her.
She looked behind her in that second, turning round to see Daniel. She smiled at him, her right foot landing on the rock. Her left foot trailed behind, and it slipped off and fell into the water. Her right foot followed and she began to fall backwards. Daniel after getting over his shock cursed under his breath. He raced towards her with disregards to caution. To him she was falling over in slow motion and into the water, and it was his duty to save her.
