An older kid sat next to me, he was much bigger than my smaller, scrawny self. He smiled, as I nervously gave him a side glance.
"Im Nikolai, you?". He had a very thick Moscow accent.
"I- I'm Koyla...". Awkwardly I looked down, staring at his shoes, he plopped himself down on the seat next to me.

Looking out the window, as the bus drove past the neighbouring streets, I thought about how my mother would cope without me, she was always lonely on her own, lost in my own thinking, I hadn't even realised Nikolai was still there, seated next to me, I've always been an introvert, striking up a conversation just wasn't my thing.

Nikolai broke the silence between us, he began shuffling a deck of cards "Do you like playing cards?". He asked, as imdiately my attention, was brought away from the window and drawn over to him. "Y- Yes..".
Smirking, he placed a pile of cards, inbetween us both,
"Pick a card, any card".

Doing as he said, I choose a card from the pile, holding it face down, so he couldn't see what it was. Fortunately it was an Ace..although my luck soon changed, realising we were playing chase the Ace... and that I had lost, admitting to my defeat, of him winning I just had to ask him, how he got so superior at playing.

"How d- did, you get so good at cards?". I asked, anxiously while he shot me a smile, as he started shuffling the cards once again, "My grandfather taught me, I can teach you to". In pursuit of Nikolai showing me how to play cards properly, we also exchanged books, the two of us took a liking to and favored reading.

I knew soon after that we'd become best freinds and so we rightfully did. Whenever I got picked on, or teased by the other boys for being small, Nikolai would always stand up for me and nobody wanted to mess with Nikolai, I later had come to know, he was sixteen, the few of the oldest.

There was one time I recall so vividly, Michail, had been teasing me that day during training, he was quite known for being a bully, but that occasion, it just really got to me.
"Hey, Koyla! Why are you so small? You look like a girl, I bet your daddy fucks you in the closet every night!". He shouted mockingly, as everybody let out a roar of laughter.

"S- Shut up my father's dead you idiot!".
I shouted back, as I began to tie my laces. "Really? Is that why you stutter ev- ev- every, sentence?". My eyes began to swell with tears, as I quietly cried. "Aww, look he's crying!". Michail, shouted so loud, almost the whole regiment could hear.

Michail shoved me, so hard I fell backwards into the dirt, scraping my ankle on a sharp piece of rumble, left on the ground. "You're just a worthless, worker like your mother and that's all you'll ever be!". He belowed, now erupting in a fit of sniggering.

"Touch him again and your fucking dead!". Nikolai, pushed the others, aside stepping to the front of the crowd, that had now gathered. "What? You really want to fight me? We all know you'd lose". I began to whipe the tears from my eyes, as I stood up.
"Yeah, Try me." Nikolai said, as nearly all of our entire year of recruits had gathered around.

Everybody started chanting "FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!". And soon, not long after a fight had began. Michail threw a kick at Nikolai, as he doged it. in return, Nikolai took a swing at Michail, as he clutched his stomach, falling to the ground in a episode of disbelief. However Michail still decided they were not yet, finished, as he got up again.

Nikolai landed a dropkick to him, as Michail started crying, failing his arms like a fool, endeavouring to hit Nikokai, resulting in the two being separated by the corporals who were in charge. Both got abousetly scolded by the Sargents and even the head cheif himself, but Nikolai didn't care he was just glad I was alright.
