I had made it up to after the iceberg hit. But I was getting exhausted. "Um...I see a um...." I was slurring my words.
"You see a what?"
"A figure...I don't know what that is." I said. There was a large black figure floating in the flooded hallway. It looked like a person. I was so dizzy and delirious from the exhaustion. It felt like I was swaying. I heard that voice again. That singing. It sounded like it was coming from the figure. Everything in real life sounded far away.
Jack snatched his hand away from me but I was in too deep to get out.
'Elizabeth....Elizabeth....' the voice called.
"What is that?" I asked.
"Beth!" I was pulled out when Jack was shaking me. My breathing was staggered and shallow and my heart was beating super fast. "Beth what's happening?"
"I don't know." I said, sitting forward as Jack ran a hand through his hair. He looked stressed. "I feel dizzy..."
He looked down and examined me, concerned. "What?"
"Everything is swaying...I'm gonna lie down." I dropped down off the rock and laid down in the cool sand. It was nighttime and the sky was very beautiful above me. But I felt like I was going to pass out. That was until Jack stood above me, his beautiful face in front of a dark blue star studded sky. He was talking but I couldn't hear him. It was calming me down. Having him there with me. My eyes started to close slowly. And then I was out.
Jack's POV:
Beth lay on the ground below me, unconscious. "God damnit." I ran a hand through my hair. What the hell is going on with her? She's hiding something from me, I just know it.
I kneeled down next to her. "Beth, wake up." I shook her slightly. It didn't work. I sighed and splashed her with some water. "Beth come on."
I kept shaking her until it felt hopeless. It felt like there was nothing I could do to wake her up. But it was getting late, and I needed to get both of us to meet Luna at the bar. And I couldn't leave Beth here. I slowly dragged her over to the lake. She would never forgive me for this but I was getting nervous.
I only got her to the shallows and shook her a little more. Useless. "Beth, please. Wake up!" I shook her more. Nothing. She was alive, I knew it, just unconscious. "Come on, help me out here." Nothing.
There were probably more options than what I was thinking. But I knew that cutting off her breathing would wake her up.
I sighed. "Please forgive me." I whispered before pressing her under the water. It was about thirty seconds later when I felt her slap my arm, hard.
I let her up and she stood up quickly, a furious look on her face.
"What the fuck?" She yelled, smoothing her hair back.
"You're awake." I said coolly before walking out of the lake.
"Hey!" She screamed, running out of the water. She stopped in front of me. Then I felt a sting on my cheek. She slapped me. To be fair, she had every right to.
"Ow." I clutched my face.
"That was for trying to drown me!" She yelled.
"Well I woke you up, didn't I?"
She huffed and crossed her arms, looking me over with a face of complete and utter distaste. "Fine. I can see why you did it. But you still drowned me despite knowing my fear of drowning and oh, how did my mother die again?"
"You're right, you're right. I shouldn't have tried to drown you. It just seemed like the best option. I'm sorry." I said. She sighed.
"You know, for such a pretty face, you can be so ignorant sometimes." She rolled her violet eyes and turned around, walking down the dirt path with her wet hair dripping.
She thinks I'm pretty?
--
We walked to the bar to see a distressed Luna smoking a cigarette outside. She eyed us over, Beth being very obviously soaked because of her hair and dress.
"What the hell did you do to my project?" She asked.
"I'm a human being." Beth said.
"Whatever. Jack, where were you guys? And why are you all wet." Luna asked. She was rubbing Beth's arms protectively but Beth didn't seem to like it.
"We were just um, walking by the uh, the uh the reservoir? Is that what it's called?" Beth asked.
"Yeah."
"Yes, we were walking by the reservoir and I fell in." She continued.
"You fell into the reservoir." Luna repeated, clearly in disbelief.
"Mhm, I was leaning over to try to grab a cigarette that I dropped in the water and I fell." She said, eyes wide. Luna leaned to the side to look at me.
"Is she serious?"
Beth looked back at me with a pleading look. I knew she didn't want Luna to know.
"Yeah that was what happened." I said.
Beth smiled at Luna. "Okay..." Luna said. "Beth, why don't you head inside. I need to speak with Jack real quick."
Beth nodded and stepped behind Luna. She started mimicking praying and mouthing 'thank god' before walking into the bar. That whole situation was way too similar to what happened with Cal and Rose after she almost jumped.
I followed Beth with my eyes. She really was something else. Something extraordinary. Luna grabbed my hand and my gaze darted back down to her.
"Woah, what the hell are you doing?" I asked, trying to get away but she kept her tight grip. She finally let go and took a drag from her cigarette, clearly trying to suppress a smile. Her eyes were wide. "What?"
"You're in love with Elizabeth." She said. My breath hitched in my throat.
"No."
"Yes you are."
"You don't know what you're saying."
"I literally have powers." She said. "You need to stop denying this. It's not like, little miss perfect or whatever is going to come find you again. She's gone. You need to move on."
She really knew nothing, didn't she? "It's not that simple. Plus, it's not like she even loves me."
"Actually, I can kinda tell, I think she does. But you never know until you ask." Luna said. "Okay, let's head inside pretty boy."
Beth loved me? No, I can't be excited by that. I'm going to find Rose and everything will be okay after that. Whatever Beth and I have doesn't matter. I'll be reunited with my true love soon enough.
It's just so confusing. No girl has ever made me feel this...intrigued. And just remembering what Beth said, that people that experienced trauma have more mature brains, they can understand love better. What if I was just lusting after Rose? This thing between Beth and I definitely feels different. But I just don't know. I just need to find Rose. Once I find her, everything will be better.
I walked into the bar, following quickly after Luna. Beth popped up in front of me, her hair still drying. "Hey, wanna buy me a drink? You did try to kill me earlier today." She said.
I laughed. "Sure. What do you want?"
"Surprise me." She said, winking jokingly. "And hey, I did want to thank you for waking me up earlier. I might not let it on, but I was scared."
I smiled. "No problem."
"Okay. I'll go sit down." She said, breathlessly before taking off to sit at the table with everyone else. I really liked seeing this new side of her. She was a lot more direct and smart than who I saw at first glance.
It's all just so confusing.
