"What do you mean you're leaving?" Luna asked as I shoved some clothes into a bag.
"It's just for a few days, I'll be back before you know it."
"Will you at least tell me where you're going?"
"I can't do that." I picked up my bag and tried to walk through the door but Luna stopped me. "Get out of the way please."
"Elizabeth, I have done so much for you. You are my best friend. I have never met anyone like you. Please tell me what you're doing." She had tears brimming in her eyes. I smiled sadly.
"Promise you won't get mad?"
"I promise."
"So, I've been going down to the lake everyday since that day after the fireworks to meet with Jack. I've...been using my powers to help him find his long lost love. Long story short, yesterday, I figured out that she was in California. That's where I'm going." I said. Luna looked at me with a stunned expression.
"Wait, why are you going to California?"
"To help. And I've always wanted to travel so this is part of his 'thank you' for helping him." I said. She nodded.
"Evil, I'm just so confused. Why would you think I would be mad at you for this?"
"I don't know. By the time you wanted to know, I was too deep in the lie to tell the truth. I'm so sorry for lying to you. But you should say goodbye to Jack before we leave. God knows when you'll see him again."
"When will you be back?"
"Me? I'll be back in three days." I said. She nodded."Okay. I'll come with you to say goodbye."
--
I walked, bag in hand to the train station with Luna. Jack seemed kind of shocked when he saw her with me. "It's okay. She knows now." I said, setting my bag down so that I could pin the remaining pieces of my curly blond hair up.
"I wanted to say goodbye. And that I'm happy that you found her." Luna said. "Um Evil, why don't you head on the train. I need to talk to Jack about something."
"Okay. And you can call me Beth now."
She gasped. "I've finally won privileges." I laughed and gave her a quick hug. "Three days." She said, squeezing me lightly before letting go. I hopped onto the train, sliding into a wooden bench thing. Three days, and the one person that I've ever had feelings for will be with someone else.
Jack's POV:
Beth hopped on the train and Luna grabbed my arm firmly. "Don't let anything happen to her. There's something about her that you don't know. Her life is in danger so you need to keep her safe at all costs."
I eyed her confusedly. "Wh-"
"If she didn't tell you. She doesn't want you to know. Beth needs to be the one to tell you." She said. "But also, you being with mystery girl, it doesn't seem like what you want anymore. Beth is in love with you, she told me. And I can tell that you love her too. Stop pretending because you know damn well that she's gonna sacrifice her happiness to make you happy."Beth was in love with me? Beth, the girl that I caught dancing around and singing in the woods was in love with me? No, I'm just gonna pretend that this didn't happen. It can't be true. It just can't. But I couldn't ignore the feeling of happiness that rushed through me when I found that out.
"I'm gonna be with Rose. She's my soulmate. Beth will find someone else." I said coolly.
"You're making a mistake." Luna replied. "Have fun living a miserable life with the wrong girl."
What the hell?
I hopped on the train and spotted Beth reading her book with a familiar glow to her tanned skin. That explains why she was so unhappy when she figured out where Rose was.
I slid in next to her and she didn't even acknowledge me. She just kept her face buried in her book as she played with a single strand of hair that sprawled out of her updo. The compartment packed with other people and soon, the train started to slowly chug along.
I busied myself with sketching a man and his young daughter that were in the seats across from us. A little ways into the ride, the little girl spoke up. "Are you an artist?" The little girl asked. She had a set of unruly red curls. Kinda like Beth's, just a deep red instead of dirty blond.
"You could say that." I replied.
"What do you draw?" She asked.
"All kinds of things. I've been all over the world, so I've seen lots of things."
"Ooh. I've never been out of America. Where have you been?"
"Paris, Italy, all over Europe, really." I said.
"Really? That's so cool." She said. The little girl peered over me to catch a glance at Beth. "Your wife is really pretty."
Beth laughed and put her book down, leaning over to look at the little girl. "Nah, we're not together. But thank you. You're very pretty too."
"Thanks."
"What's your name?" Beth asked.
"Salice."
"That's a very pretty name. I'm Beth."
"Nice to meet you. What's your name, artist man?" Salice asked me.
"I'm Jack." I said, a bit flustered. I couldn't keep my eyes off of Beth. That wasn't irregular because she was so beautiful. But she looked so happy and calm despite the current circumstances. I don't understand why this had to be so confusing. Beth just made me feel completely different than anyone else. Even Rose. But Rose was the reason why we were on this trip in the first place.
It was all just too confusing.
