the sun's beauty bursted across the reflective panels of the window, illuminating the bland and dull contents within room 237. an english classroom, it held a very disassociated mary mcdonough who was too focused on her diary entry for the day rather than macbeth.

the marvelous sound of the chiming bell alarmed throughout the school, a sigh of relief fell from the majority.

mary turned the corner out of the classroom, to be met with the face of her closest friend valerie. a large pink bubble expanded from the girls mouth about the size of a fist, a small squeal erupted from the blonde as it popped back in her face.

"aw, val" mary laughed in her face before loosely throwing an arm around the girl's shoulders. as the two headed down the hallway, just about every boy's attention was drawn to the duo. this included the attention of a very particular, philip dale.

as the love of his life, andie walsh, began down the hallway away from him, he couldn't help but notice his gaze wandering off of the redhead and to someone new. mary mcdonough.

duckie didn't see a point in straying away from the labeled popular pupils like most inferior cliques did. he knew none of the girls would ever think about letting themselves near him, and all the boys would only ever plan to humiliate him whether it be by physical or verbal means. he knew there was no point in trying to befriend them, and he definitely didn't want to be invisible.

this considered, he often found himself strutting up to the populars as if they were the same rank as him— if not, lower.

the dark haired boy jogged up to the two, his circular shades were now clutched in his left hand. "hello, ladies" he smoothly slid in way of their path.

mary's eyes met duckie's as he appeared in front of her, soon falling down to his rosy cheeks and beaming smile, and finally to the rest of his attire. she silently declared him breathtaking. he must be a senior. she thought, being that she only ever associated with people in her junior class excluding her older brother and his best friend, steffen. she had never seen the boy standing in front of her before, if she had— she would have most certainly remembered him.

"you need something from us?" valerie tilted her head, a slight hinge of annoyance and impatience in her voice.

i may be able to work out a deal where either one– or the both of you could be pregnant by the holidays! he thought, a classic line he had used on many girls out of his league before. yet he decided against it, now fumbling for something more proper to say in the sense that he found himself caring what kind of impression he made on them.

"i.. just.. wanted to say, hello!" he began quite slowly but managed his way through the sentence toward the conclusion. "well, hello" mary's mouth opened with a small smile before she could even think. soon after this, her delicate hand was extended outward for the boy to shake.

duckie's eyes were now as wide as pearls. he bit the inside of his cheek subtly to prove to himself this was all really happening.

"i'm mary, but real close friends call me petal. it's cause' flowers are all i talk about" the girl laughed, pulling a small daisy out from her pocket and waving it in front of his eyes.

he blinked carefully, watching the daisy as his hand snugly fit around hers. he thought about the pace of which he was shaking her hand. is this too fast? is this too slow? are my hands clammy? oh god my hands are probably clam–

"here, take this one" mary flipped his hand, palm facing the ceiling. delicately setting the flower on his soft skin, the two souls were ripped from their dream state when the bell rang.

"mary, let's go! if we don't get outside now malcom isn't going to drive us! we're lucky to even be getting a ride from him!" valerie whined, slightly tugging the girl's sweater sleeve.

"wait! my name, it's phil.. but close friends call me duckie" he announced, mary's gaze snapped back toward him as valerie continued pulling her.

"to be continued, duckie" mary called to him, the hall was bare now except for his lone figure. the two couldn't wrap their head around the strange encounter they had just created as they separated ways.

"mary, you're seriously gonna be his friend?"i always see people picking on the kid" valerie snapped her gum causing mary to quickly turn toward her. "you've seen him before?" she muttered in disbelief.

"oh yeah! he hangs out with andie walsh, you know, the quiet red headed girl? that's really the only person i've ever seen him with though... maybe it's his girlfri—"

"let's not jump to conclusions here" mary interrupted, pushing open the front door to the school where a cherry red chevelle was parked awaiting them.

"forget him for now! look at the babe whose riding us uptown!" valerie held a smile ear to ear as they approached the vehicle, a handsome blonde behind the steering wheel.

"hi malcom!" valerie sang, slipping into the backseat with mary. "what am i your guys' chauffeur? someone better get up here!" he motioned to the empty passenger seat causing a laugh to erupt from mary. "preferably you, mary" he smirked.

"nope, i'm not leaving my girl in the back seat alone" mary closed her eyes, holding a hand up in protest to the boy who rolled his eyes and started the engine.

"thanks babe" valerie pouted, leaning into the girl and planting a soft kiss on her cheek. "so where to, ladies?"
