As the morning progressed Coden couldn't help but feel the off vibe Haven was giving him and he didn't like it one bit.
"Why were you crying, love?" He asked lowly, she could feel the rumble of his chest as her eyes shut.
"My monster, I mean mother, had called me while you were sleeping." She mumbled sleepily as she snuggled closer into the warmth of his embrace.
Suddenly everything clicked within Coden as he heard her speak of her mother in such strong dislike. He, himself, despised the woman in all her being. Although he had never had the displeasure of meeting her in the flesh, he already hated her from the way Haven had acted this morning and he was sure that her mother had installed these insecurities within the woman he loved.
As Haven's eyes fluttered shut, Coden couldn't seem to find the sleep that he felt hours earlier.
He ran his hand through Haven's hair and smiled as she purred in contentment.
Seeing her phone on the side, he couldn't help but wonder what her mother had said to have her react the way that she did.
Silently getting off the bed, Coden grabbed Haven's phone and made his way into her living room.
He smiled as he opened the phone to see a picture of the two together. Making his way towards the recents, he clicked on the first number that was displayed on the screen.
His anticipation didn't last long as the phone was picked up after the first ring.
"I knew you would call back." The voice sounded so heartless and cold, not one that a mother would use, but then again what did he know about mothers for the matter.
"Is this Mrs. Montessori?" He questioned through the screen.
"It's Ms.." She corrected. "Who is speaking?"
"This is Coden. Your daughter's boyfriend." He answered quite proudly.
"Oh, so you're the boy that's infatuated with my daughter." He heard the change of tone in her voice immediately.
"More than infatuated I'd like to say."
"Oh dear boy. Why are you with her?"
"Excuse me?" He was in disbelief.
"Obviously with the information provided to me about you, you could do so much better than my daughter. Do you pity her? Is that it? Is she an easy lay?" Her mother continued asking demeaning questions as Coden's mouth dropped farther with each one.
"Wow." He breathed.
"You pity her don't you? I knew it!" Her mother sounded almost victorious. "I knew -."
"Stop. Just stop." He demanded.
"What?"
"How can you just spew such nonsense about your own daughter. Your own flesh and blood?"
"Listen -," she tried to speak.
"No you listen to me. The woman you speak so horridly of is the most wonderful woman I have ever met. She's kind, she's beautiful and no matter what you say she's perfect. I thank god that whatever values you own haven't been instilled in her.
The woman you speak so lowly of is a woman I happen to love and one that I happen to want to marry some day and I will not allow anyone to talk to her as you do. If you so much as call her to say such disgusting things again, I will personally cut off all contact you will ever have with her again. Goodbye." He spoke as he hit the end button with such aggressiveness that he feared the screen may have broken.
He shook his head in annoyance as he began walking back to his sleeping beauty only to find her standing in the archway with tears glistening in her eyes.
Coden's eyes widened but before he could say anything two arms wrapped around his waist and the familiar smell of roses engulfed him.
He rested his chin on her head as he heard the faint 'thank you' expel from her mouth.
