41. The Empress’s Birthday
Translator: Flying Lines
Long Haoze trolled down the street with Mu Xiyue until it got dark.
“Let’s call it a day,” he said, “I have something to tell you next time. Get prepared for that. I’m going home. Bye.”
As he finished, he walked away quickly and shyly. Mu Xiyue was left alone, in total confusion.
She shook her head and headed for Long Yinfeng’s mansion.
After she got home, she rushed to the kitchen, checking if there was something to eat. Long Yinfeng stopped her on her way.
“I know you must be starving,” said Long Yinfeng, “I kept you some dishes in my study. Come with me. And I have something to tell you.”
Long Yinfeng took her hand, and walked to the study with her.
“Wow, so many dishes!” Mu Xiyue knocked off his hand, rushed to the table and enjoyed the dishes with her hand, regardless of disgrace.
Long Yinfeng teased, “You still act like a little girl. Look, you’ve got stains on your face. And have you washed your hands?”
“Don’t bother,” replied Mu Xiyue, “I’ll wash after I finish them.”
She didn’t care at all. Such delicious dishes filled her mind, and she had no point for anything else.
“Well, enjoy yourself,” said Long Yinfeng seriously, “When you eat, let me tell you something.”
“Okay. Go ahead,” replied Mu Xiyue casually.
“The empress is having her birthday soon. We’re going to the imperial palace for her birthday party. You have to get prepared for that.”
“What? What!” Mu Xiyue was choked by his words. Long Yinfeng patted on her back to make her breathe smoothly.
“You hear it right. We’re going to the imperial palace,” repeated Long Yinfeng.
Immediately, Mu Xiyue lost her appetite. And her face fell.
“Must we go?” asked she, sounding quite pitiful.
“Father gave the order. We have to go,” Long Yinfeng explained, “You know I don’t want to go, either.”
“Fine, then,” replied Mu Xiyue, “But what should we do? I have no idea!”
“Just learn some simple etiquettes,” Long Yinfeng said a few words to comfort her, “Leave the rest to me. Don’t be nervous.”
In the days to come, Mu Xiyue didn’t sneak out for fun. Instead, she stayed and learnt boring etiquettes.
“AAAAARRRGH!” Mu Xiyue yelled and complained, “I’m going crazy! What complicated etiquettes!”
“Your Highness, it’s easy to learn them if you practice carefully,” teased Yanzi.
“I don’t like such etiquettes!” Mu Xiyue complained and pouted.
“Could I have some rest before I keep studying again?” she begged, “Just for a few minutes!”
“Your Highness, we’ve been resting for quite a moment,” Yanzi shook her head and replied, “Yet you just learnt for a few minutes.”
“But I feel I’ve been learning for such a long time. Let me take some more rest.”
“No way,” Yanzi replied firmly, “The empress’s birthday is coming. You should learn carefully, or you might get into trouble.”
“All right, then,” Mu Xiyue barely replied, “I’ll practice before I have some rest.”
