Lucy smiled as she sipped her coffee. She smiled out the window of a New York City train headed for Virginia. She was going back to the place where she had spent three years consecutively without going home; back to the place that she had once been excited to call her new home.
That felt so foreign now as Lucy watched the trees pace by in a blur. How was it possible that just a mere four months ago she was being held captive in some random apartment? Of the Johnathan and Ryan Shaw boys: the second case she had ever gotten the chance to work with her father on. That felt even more foreign.
Lucy faced away from the window now, but her smile remained. It was only 6 am, but she felt wide awake. Going back to Virginia was exciting for her. She missed the people that she had called her coworkers for only a few days. She missed David Rossi and Aaron Hotchner and Jennifer Jareau and Derek Morgan. Most importantly, she missed Spencer Reid.
After their night together, Lucy felt as though they were somehow going to be bonded for life. It was a weird feeling, something else so foreign once, because they had moved all at once. It was so beyond fast. But still, she felt as though their connection had run so deep. The last few months, though, Spencer and Lucy had shared a handful of texts and phone calls and one singular conversation in person. Granted, that conversation was, in fact, considered a date, but looking back, Lucy didn't think that their life-long connection would turn into just a few over-the-phone conversations and one lone date.
Lucy pulled out her phone and scrolled through her recently called list until her fingers picked out his name. She pressed the call button and waited.
"Hey, Lu," He sounded so tired.
"Hi, Spence. I'm close."
"Yay! I'm here."
Lucy hung up the phone. Butterflies swarmed her stomach. She was a grown woman. He was a grown man. Why were butterflies swarming her stomach? This wasn't high school. Lucy took another sip of her coffee. Despite strongly disliking the taste and the jitters that were to follow, she needed the energy boost right about now. She wanted the caffeine in her system today. Today was the day.
Thirty-seven seconds later, the train pulled into the station, there was a quick, incoherent announcement made and then the doors were open. Lucy had one rolling suitcase and her backpack and, of course, her coffee. She had on leggings, and a white tee layered underneath Spencer's FBI jacket. The one he had never gotten back. It was beautiful out; the sun was just rising and it was supposed to be a clear, calm day. No rain, no thunder, nothing except the sun. It was August, so it was going to be a hot one, but right now it was a cool early morning.
The other passengers dashed around madly to get to their cars or inside the station and some even off the platform and into the train, but Lucy began to make her way to Spencer and his patiently parked car. She pushed her glasses further up her nose and finally spotted him. He smiled widely at her and quickly took her suitcase.
