You clutch tightly at the loose fabric of your pants as you sit in the parking lot of your new school. It was a small school in a small town and you knew for a fact that an outsider would stick out like a sore thumb. At your old school, no one noticed you. You were able to silently work alone and go about your day to yourself. It was lonely, but you were used to it. Now, you're mustering up enough courage to get out of your car and step into the doors of your new life. With a much needed sigh, you let out the tension inside your chest and open your car door, stepping out to face your school.
You had already met with many of the workers at the school to work out your past school documents and to get a basic understanding of the school and it's layout. You had even already met your teachers and had a short conversation with each on what the classes will be like. Despite how well you prepared, you still felt like a bowling ball was resting in your stomach and that you could collapse at any moment. "Come on you big baby. It's not that bad.", you whisper to yourself as you begin to walk through the entrance of the school with your new schedule in hand.
The entrance led to a courtyard in the school. You were early so classes hadn't begun yet and there were very few students that you could see. There was a blonde girl with bright blue eyes reading a book while sitting on an outdoor bench. She noticed you staring and looked up to lock eyes with you. She gives a friendly smile and tilts her head as if she was saying "Hello" without saying any words at all. You respond with a similar smile, yet you began to overthink it. "Did I smile weird? Did she see me almost trip?", you inner monologue spouted embarrassing questions at you.
You continued forward on the sidewalk through the courtyard and noticed not too far ahead two boys throwing a football back and fourth. One was blonde with a very muscular build. He was intimidating to look at. The other was taller and thinner with dark hair. He didn't seem intimidating at all and even made eye contact with you for a couple of seconds. You noticed the blonde one kept glancing in your direction. "Does he think I'm weird? Why is he looking at me? Do I have something on my face?", you brain panicked as you lowered your head and walked past them with confidence lower than ever. "Dude, stop staring at Historia! You keep dropping the ball!", the dark haired one said. You let out a small sigh of relief, believing you were off the hook.
You began to gain the confidence back to lift your head up and figure out what part of the school you should explore next. Before you could do so, you ran straight into someone, almost knocking you to the ground. Your body immediately began to boil with embarrassment. "Watch where you're going.", an assertive voice says. "I'm so sorry! I'm really sorry! I didn't see y-" "Calm down. It's fine. Just look out better next time alright.", the voice cuts you off. You couldn't tell if the person was angry or not. The tone was aggressive but yet they seemed assuring. You look up to see a hand extended in front of you. A girl with short brown hair pulled into a ponytail stares down at you. She's wearing big black boots and a black leather jacket which make her look very intimidating. "I'm Ymir.", she says with her hand still extended outward. You hesitantly grab it and come back to your feet as the girl helps you. "Thanks... I'm (Y/N)..", you say shyly. "Yeah, I know." Her words caught you off guard.
"What do you mean?", you ask her, slightly panicked as you wondered about how she knew your name, "The whole school's been talking about you all week. We heard we're getting a new student and everyone went wild. Look's like your first impression is a bit....rocky." Your heart raced at the realization that the whole school will be gluing their eyes to you and echoing your name from their mouths. "Hey don't think too much about it. Believe me, you're not the worst thing to happen to this school.", she smiles and pats your back kind of hard, knocking you forward a little bit. As your first real interaction with someone from the school, you wondered if it was good or not. 'You're not the worst thing to happen to this school', her words echoed through your head. What could that mean?
