The gym was very loud. Basketball hoops were crowded by jumping boys who were competitively playing as if it was a real game. Scattered across the gym were groups of friends in circles, inventing their own games as they throw, hit, and kick balls back and forth. "You can either play or you can just walk around the gym. What do you want to do?", Ymir asks. Her voice was heavily muffled by the sounds of the basketballs being dribbled. "I guess walk.", you say. It seemed like the easiest option. Everyone playing a game already knew each other. It would feel wrong to force yourself into their groups. You began to walk laps around the gym as Ymir followed by your side with her hands stuffed in the pockets of her sweatpants.
"So.. why'd you move?" she tried to start conversation. "Well", you hesitantly say. It was your moms home town. You both moved there after your parents went through a messy divorce. You didn't want to talk about it to anyone yet, but you didn't want to lie. "It was ....a family situation." you say. "Ah. I've had plenty of those." she says with a smile as she tries to lighten the conversation. "What do you like to do for fun?", she continues. "Well...", the pressure of wanting to make a good impression began to consume you and suddenly you couldn't even think of what you do in your spare time. "I like to read.. and watch movies.", you say. "Oh come on that's what everyone says. There's gotta be something you like to do other than that.", she pushes. "Well what do you do for fun then?', you ask her, shocked at the slight sass you gave. She recognized the slight agitation in your tone and it thrilled her. "Well I like to drive around at night. I like to listen to music and pretend I'm in a movie. I like to go to parties that Connie throws every now and then.", she says.
"I'm sure he'll invite you to one soon. Almost everyone get's along here." The thought of going to a party scared you, but it did make you happy to hear that maybe it wouldn't be that hard to make friends. Suddenly your joyful mood is ruined by a fly basketball hitting you in the head. It didn't hurt really, but it immediately made your entire body burn with embarrassment. "HEY REINER WATCH WHERE YOU'RE SHOOTING!", she yells at a muscular and intimidating blonde man. "I didn't mean to chill out.", he groans. "Did playing all that football really damage your brain THAT bad?" she continued to jab at him. "Ymir, drop it and keep walking.", the coach commands. The coach didn't sound shocked at her aggressiveness and no one in the gym paid much attention. This must be a common occurrence. She huffs and begins to walk with you again. "He's a little hard to get along with." she says. "Are you okay?" "Yeah, I'm fine. Thanks.", you reply with a smile.
After P.E ends, you head back to the girls locker room to change. With Ymir being a lot nicer than she initially seems, you feel safe enough to change around her. You stood by her side awkwardly as she talked to the blonde girl she referred to as Historia earlier and a girl with dark hair who didn't say much. The bell rung and you realized it was time for lunch. "Um Ymir.. could I sit with you? I don't want to sit alone.", you say. "Sure thing! Me, Historia, Mikasa, and some other people usually sit together." For someone who you originally thought to be a social reject, she seems to be friends with a lot of people. Then again, people at small schools often talk to each other just because they know each other. The teachers are definitely not a big fan of her from what you've seen, though. Her aggression seemed to be aimed at more authority type figures instead of peers. You wonder why that might be as you walk as a group to the cafeteria.
You sit with the girls at their usual spot in the cafeteria. Two boys who you recognize sit down as part of your group. It was Armin and Eren. "Hi (Y/N)! I see you've gotten along with Ymir. That's definitely a good sign.", Armin chuckles. "Quiet Coconut head.", she jokes. He responds with a smile and a slight eyeroll. "(Y/N) we're going to go get lunch. Do you want to come?", Historia asks as her, Mikasa, and the boys get ready to go get food from the lunch line. "No thanks, I packed a lunch. Thank you though." "Sure thing.", she replies with a warm smile and begins to walk towards the line with the others following behind. "Are you going?", you ask Ymir. "I uh.. don't have any lunch money.", she says. She looks away slightly, hoping to hide her embarrassment. "I can share mine. Here, have half of my sandwich.", you say as you pull out a home made sandwich from your back. "I don't need your donations.", she says defensively. You've learned from how the other students react to her that her hostility and harshness often isn't how she really feels. Because of this, you don't budge. Instead, you bring the sandwich closer to her hand. "Fine. Thanks.", she says as she takes half and begins to eat it. Her tone was blunt, but you knew she was grateful.
