It was a long walk back to the orphanage once they finished their cookie deliveries. Ivory held onto Margos hand while Agnes walked a little behind. But then there was Edith who was continuously jumping in puddles.
"Edith, stop it!" Margo said as the puddles were beginning to splash them.
"What? I'm just walking."
After that they continued their walk in peace and finally reached Miss Hatties Orphanage For Girls.
They walked into the dimly lit room with blue walls and blue tiles. Every spot on the wall contained a picture of a child. While Miss Hatties desk sat in the middle. On the floor before her desk was a small caution line.
" Hi, Miss Hattie. We're back." They all say politely as they make it to the line before her desk.
"Hello, girls!" She calls out from her computer.
"Anybody come to adopt us while we were out?" Agnes asks while standing on her tip toes peaking over the desk. Ivory was wondering as well but was too afraid to ask. She still stood behind the line.
"Hmm... Let me think. No!" Miss Hattie responded rather harshly.
Edith immediately puts a mud pie on Miss Hattie's desk, much to her displeasure.
"Edith! What did you put on my desk?" She questions exasperated.
"A mud pie."
"You're never gonna get adopted, Edith. You know that, don't you?" She sighs.
"Yeah, I know." Edith backs up a bit and looks down mumbling the words.
"Good. So, how did it go, girls? Did we meet our quotas?" She says returning to her quirky attitude.
"Hmm... Sorta. We sold 43 mini-mints, 30 choco-swirlies and 18 coco-nutties." Margo replied as she read off their clip board. They all smile at Miss Hattie expecting her it be pleased but she harshly sits up from her desk.
"Okay. Well, you say that like it's a great sale day. Look at my face! Do you still think it's a great sale day?"
Edith rolls her eyes in response.
"Eighteen coco-nutties. I think we can do a little better than that, don't you? Yeah. We wouldn't want to spend the weekend in the Box of Shame, would we? No." She spoke in fake sadness.
"No, Miss Hattie." They all replied.
"Okay, good. Off you go. Go clean something of mine."
They turn and leave the room while Ivory is back holding Margos hand. Margo is used to it by now, she knew that Ivory kind of needed a grounding as she was shy.
"Hi, Penny." They say to the girl in the box of shame.
"Hi, guys."
