It's funny how random moments pop up in your head, moments that bring you back to that time when every love song gave you butterflies and all you ever think about was the next movie you'll watch together. Or how a certain smell reminds you of that familiar scent that you always smelled in your bedsheets the morning after or the clothes that he borrowed. You pass by the spots where you spent hours talking about the small and big things in life and you can't help yourself recalling all the silly stuff you laughed about, amused by all the things you had in common.
And you're glad that you find this funny now because in the past, all of these would just slowly crush you and drag you back to a dark place full of blame and guilt and anger and regrets. Now that you're gradually emerging from this vicious cycle, you try your best to hold on to the good memories. You hold on tight enough that it still gives you hope that someday, someone's going to be there again to fill that void. But not too tight that it keeps you from breaking free of the negativity and holding you back from seeing the great things that you have in your life right now.
When the mind tries to forget, it's relatively easier to repress the thoughts and think about "more important" things. But the heart? The heart's a tough one to convince. You ask for it not to be so sensitive, not to hurt every time you you see anything related to the past, and not to feel so emotional that you drown from all the sadness.
But whether it's the brain or the heart, what's good about moving on is that both of them learn from the experience. You just have to condition them to be more guarded but not apathetic, to be more cautious but not cynical. You make sure that the bruises serve as reminders that the pain that comes with love is all worth it and at the end of the day, whichever route it goes, you gain something from it. And what matters is that you move forward with your head held up high because you should be proud of yourself for having the courage to love and and be loved.
