"Have you ever actually been to one of these?" I asked as I looked over at Sam. He was wearing a red hat with black stripes and he looked like a spray tanned tiger. It was Jared's first game, so naturally we had to be there.
"Not sober." He replied as he looked around at all the parents and little kids that were swarming into the home team seating area.
I was more pre occupied with looking for Jared among that team. I saw 27 but not 7. I nibbled on the inside of my lip as my eyes continued to scan the field. Then I heard the cheerleaders.
"Who are we? THE TIGERS! Who are we gonna beat? THE WILDCATS!"
I smiled as the cheer ended and Mandy waved up at me. I waved back and took my seat with Sam on the bleachers. Daryl and Jared were both out on the field so our group was cut a little short. Eric almost never came to events like this and neither Sam nor I could stand Noah. Well I couldn't stand Noah, Sam pretended not to for my sake.
"And now the starting line up for The North Side Tigers!" The announcers voice was broken by the sounds of cheers from the fan section.
I clapped and looked out for people I might know.
"Number 11, a junior, West Erikson!" There were more cheers but I just zoned out. Really there was only one player I was there to watch tonight.
"Number 25, a senior, Curtis Matthews!" I clapped softly and watched the cheerleaders as Mandy smiled and screamed cheers with the rest of the squad. "And Number 7, a senior, Jared Hastings!"
I smiled and cupped my hands around my mouth to scream. "Go Jared!"
Sam smiled and did some cheer of his own. It must have been a Sam and Jared thing because I could swear that Jared's head turned up and looked directly at us.
As the game went on I started to freak out. Jared got tackled pretty hard with in the first 20 minutes of the game. Sam made me get up and walk to the concessions just so that I would stop pinching his arm.
While I was standing at the concessions I saw Noah. He was talking to some kids who looked like they were still in middle school. I had to remind myself that he was only a freshman.
I tried to avoid his eyes but he recognized me under my beanie.
"Olivia!" He called as he walked over to me, waving his hands like a maniac.
"Noah." I said through gritted teeth as he walked over to me and put his hands on his hips.
"What are you doing here? I didn't peg you for a football girl."
"Well, Jared's playing so.." I shrugged and then tried to walk back to my seat. "I'll see you later."
"Wait, are you here with Sam?"
"Yes." I said quietly as I looked down at my drink.
"Cool, tell him I'll be down there later, Ok?"
"Yay!" I said sarcastically as I turned back to the bleachers and walked down the stairs to my seat.
Right as I sat down my eyes flitted up to the field again. Curtis Matthews threw the ball into the air and it went sailing down the field right into the open arms of one of the players. The guy caught it and then ran for his life towards what I believe is called the end zone.
He got there before any of the other players and then everyone cheered and the announcer yelled into the microphone. "And once again that's Jared Hastings with the touchdown!"
My eyes widened and I stood up next to Sam, screaming my head off. I still couldn't believe that my best friend was out of football, let alone the high scorer of the game.
