"So you just hang out with your brother?" Ren asked a little surprised while she looked back at me with wide eyes.
She had just gotten home from her first day back at school after what had happened. For a whole week she just stayed home and watched TV. The weird thing was that Sam and I both completely trusted her. She seemed to be taking everything in a little slowly. And I didn't blame her, if my parents had reacted even remotely negatively to my coming out I would have wanted to run away too. The feeling of being rejected by your parents can hurt even the strongest people.
"Yeah, trust me it's so much easier having guy friends than girl friends."
She was sitting on one of the bar stools while I was making mac and cheese. Her brow furrowed in thought and then she looked up at me. "Why have a girlfriend then?"
I thought about her question for a moment as the dried cheese spilled into the pot of noodles.
"Because, in my experience, it's easier to be in a relationship with a girl than a guy. I mean they remember all the dates and shit like that." My eyes widened and I turned back to her. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to swear."
Her lips turned up in a smile as she took a bite of the banana she was eating, once she had swallowed she answered. "It's totally fine, I can handle it."
I smiled back and turned to the mac and cheese. While I was mixing the food the silence dragged on. "So do you want to talk about today?"
She let out a sigh like she had been holding in her breathe for the whole 15 minutes she had been home. "Josh and I talked."
"Josh is the one that outed you right?" I finished mixing the food and pulled down 3 plates from the cupboard.
"Yeah."
I nodded in understanding as I started to set the table. "Was practice alright?"
Ren was on the middle school volleyball team and loved it. The only thing I was worried about was that the other girls might be mean to her now that they knew who she was.
"Yeah it was good. Alison was totally ok with the fact that I was gone for so long."
I raised an eyebrow as I put down the plates on the table in front of me. "Really?"
"Yeah, one of the girls told her what happened."
I nodded again and put down the forks on the table cloth. "Do you happen to know where Sam is?" I asked finally realizing I hadn't seen him since I got home.
She shrugged and took one of the half circle noodles out the pot, popping it her mouth.
"Don't eat any of that until Sam and I are both back here!" I said, pointing an excusing finger at her.
She sucked both of her lips into her mouth in attempt to hide her guilty smile. I smiled and shook my head as I walked down the stairs and into the basement.
For the first time in my memory of Sam doing drugs there wasn't any smoke. I looked around the open room and didn't see anything. My eyebrows moved further up on my face as the seconds passed.
I ran up the steps two at a time, as I reached the top I pulled the hem of my shirt down to cover my exposed stomach area.
Sam wasn't in his room either or the bathroom, yard, or living room. Finally I went out to the garage to check for his car, the thought hitting me that he might not be home.
I pulled the door open and stepped out into the cool air that was pouring in from the open door. My eyes moved up and I saw something that made my jaw drop.
