The morning passed by as usual, medications and small tests being done on him. By the time midday came, San was finally left to chill with Wooyoung who patiently waited for him to be ready."Have you eaten yet?" San mumbled tiredly to the younger who gave him a firm nod in return.
"You were getting your concussion checked when I was eating. After being in here quite some time, you get used to shovelling down the food you're given," he chuckled, him too feeling quite drained from their late night chats they had shared the night before.
San hummed at this before he tilted his head over in the direction of the boy who lay on the bed to his left.
"Why are you even here, Woo?" He whispered carefully, not too sure if he was being insensitive with the topic.
The younger stopped twirling his hair with his fingers, a habit that San found quite cute. "Same reason as you. I was in a car crash a little while back. I had a transplant or two, just like you actually. There are still concerns about complications since they nearly lost me in the operation room," he explained rather nonchalantly.
"Maybe they put us together in this room so that we could relate or something," the blonde quietly spoke, a barely noticeable smile appearing on his face as he watched Wooyoung begin to twirl his fringe again.
"Enough about our tragic lives!" He exclaimed with a small chuckle, his witticism eliciting a laugh from San too. "Next up on our 'to do list' is," he continued, pulling out the notebook that they had documented their ideas in. "Card games!"
San reached over with a grunt of pain to grab into the deck of cards that his nurse had left for him upon the request yesterday.
A pain shot up from below his chest, where the dressing was. San's face contorted into an expression of utter agony as he lay back, his hands clasped tightly around the packet of cards and his breaths evening out.
"San?" Wooyoung whispered, his eyes widening and his hands trembling as he kicked his covers off of him and leapt to the older's side. "What's hurting you?" He pressed, his brows furrowed with concern as his fingers interlaced with the other's subtly.
"I just n-need a moment," the blonde wheezed, now knowing exactly what his limits were. "Moved a bit quick."
Still, Wooyoung held his hand and refused to let go until the pain written on the older's face faded into comfort again.
"I'm feeling a little better," he uttered out, his grip loosening around the deck of cards as he offered them to Wooyoung.
"No, you should shuffle them. I've never been much good at that," the younger replied, slowly untangling their fingers.
Wooyoung's touch felt so warm beneath his hands, and although he shouldn't have, he felt the heaviness of disappointment weigh on his chest as the brunette retracted his hand.
Instead of letting his mind linger on this, he skilfully shuffled the cards before setting them down on his bed, in front of where Wooyoung sat cross legged on the floor.
"Now I'll divide them in half," he whispered, quickly throwing the cards down on the bed again in two even piles.
The shorter watched with a fond smile, but still observed the focused boy, noticing how the corner of his lips would twitch when he moved too much. He didn't enjoy seeing anyone in pain, but his heart twinged when it was his new roommate.
In no time, after a few instructions, Wooyoung had learnt the ways of playing cards, and suddenly the losses were turning to wins for him, which of course left San a little sour.
"Don't be a sore loser," the younger chided, clapping his hands together as he stood from the floor and collected the cards which had gone flying after a certain somebody lost again.
"Can I help collect?" San asked quietly, already knowing that he wouldn't be allowed since Wooyoung was overly cautious.
A small shake of the head made the elder's shoulders drop with disappointment.
"But," the shorter began after he collected them all up off the ground and placed them in the packet before placing them down on the bedside table. "You can help."
"How?"
"Rest up." He leaned over and placed a peck on San's cheek before turning the lights off. "And I'll see you in the morning for that puzzle that Doctor Min promised us."
San's cheeks flared up bright red in embarrassment as the lingering sensation of Wooyoung's lips against his heated skin remained.
"Night Sannie."
After swallowing a few more times to calm himself, San whispered a small, "Night Woo" before he turned away, his heart racing in his chest.
What was that?
