Hey there, Beauties! Just wanted to notify those of you who haven't heard yet that I finished writing the end of Chapter Five, so you may want to go read that for this all to make sense. Not much happened that you didn't already know, but their destination was revealed. My space bar is broken, so there may be some words strung together. I'll go through and fix that. (:
Also, I'm eating a candy cane, which reminded me of Christmas a couple of days ago... So Merry (Late) Christmas, everybody!!
-----------------------------
We walked down a couple of streets lined with trash and houses that didn't look much better. Most of the houses seemed completely abandoned, but Jace assured us that people lived in them and that they were sleeping. It seemed so odd to me that people slept in the day time. Why would they do that?
Our hands were still locked, and we didn't want to let go. We each carried our blanket and Jace carried the potato sack of food.
"So, we're getting really close. It'll probably be like another couple of minutes before we get there," Jace said. We kept on walking until we neared a worn down house. It looked like it was once a magnificant place that just wasn't kept up. It was two stories high and it had a huge porch on the front. "Well, we're here," he announced.
We walked up the creaky steps and onto the deck. Jace didn't even bother knocking on the door. He took the blankets and piled them neatly on the bench-swing. Adri picked up a notepad and pen that were left on the swing and she wrote in neat handwriting "Thanks for lending these to us. We appreciate it. -Jace and friends". After setting the note on the blankets, we all went back down the steps, stopping at the bottom.
"Where do we go next? How far do you live?" I asked Jace.
"Well...not far. I doubt it would take a full minute to get to my house," he said.
"Wow, which house is yours?" Adri inquired, looking around at all the beat up houses around us.
"That one." Jace pointed straight across the street. I took in the sight.
In front of me stood a simple house. It was two stories high, as most of the houses around us were. The chipping paint that was almost gone was a burgundy color. The porch on this house was smaller than the one behind us, but it also had a swing that was newly painted white. The door was white too, but the paint wasn't fresh. One of the upstairs windows was broken and the whole house seemed to have sunk into the ground a little bit, but otherwise, it was prettier and in better shape than the rest of the houses on the street.
After a moment of silence as we all took in the sight of the place where Jace grew up, Adri spoke up.
"Well, shall we?" she asked.
"Yeah," I said in an airy, distant voice. My mind was wandering everywhere but here.
"Uh, sure." Jace seemed less sure than the rest of us, but we all walked closer. I squeezed his hand to reassure him and let him know that I was excited. We quickly climbed the steps and Jace opened the door without knocking. Well, I guess it was his house so he didn't need to knock anyways.
"Wait here a second. Well, nah, nevermind. Follow me."
I wondered for a moment if he had something that he wished he could hide, but I put it out of mind as we continued to reunite the first family. Walking through Jace's house, I noticed that it was mostly tidy, but things lay strewn on the floor here and there. Clothing littered one of the rooms' floor. Other than looking lived in, it was a really nice place on the inside. We walked down a fairly large hallway with rooms on either side until we hit a big living room.
