Chapter 6: 9-month pregnant Astrid, D-Day

It was a normal afternoon in the Haddock house as Astrid is sitting on the couch with her feet up on the coffee table. She wore warm fuzzy gray slippers that were shaped like mice while scrolling through Amazon on her phone.

Hiccup meanwhile had come in from the backyard and was opening cabinets left and right. "Honey have you seen my tape measurer?"

"You left it upstairs when you were redoing the closet last month," Astrid responded as she scrolled through Amazon and found a porcelain swan she wanted to buy. It would be perfect for the living room in her opinion.

Hiccup went upstairs just as Astrid called out "At least close the cabinet doors! Jeez," But he hadn't heard her so she stood up, placed her phone on the couch and trudged over to the open cabinets to shut them. 'Why does he always forget to close them,' Astrid grumbled in her mind.

"Honey!!!" Hiccup called from upstairs. "Have you seen my hammer?!"

"Check the linen closet! You had it with you when you tried to fix the vacuum!" She shouted back as she returned to her warm couch.

"Why would I use a hammer to fix the vacuum?!" Hiccup shouted back from upstairs which caused Astrid to roll her eyes at her husband and answer "Beats me! I found the vacuum duct-taped!" And she still had a bone to pick with Hiccup about that. They might as well get a brand new vacuum or one of those fancy Roombas at this point.

"Found it!" Hiccup shouted as he came back downstairs from his triumphant search. Astrid who was back on the couch merely lifted a brow in curiosity.

"Are you finally going to work on Zephyr's dollhouse?" She asked. "Where is Zephyr even?"

"She's out in the backyard playing in that sandbox Gobber made," Hiccup told her. "She's gonna watch daddy work."

Astrid noted that Hiccup was skirting around the dollhouse talk. "So what are you making?" she asked instead.

"Uhm..... just repairing the hole in the fence," Hiccup nervously answered.

"Wait, why is that only being repaired today?!" Astrid asked now as she focused a bit more on Hiccup. "It's been days since the slip and slide incident." The incident she was referring to was when Stoick and Valka came to visit along with Gobber. They had brought quite a lot of food so Astrid was a happy camper with a plate of chicken casserole. Hiccup had taken out the slip and slide they had from the garage and put it in the backyard and Zephyr had come running out of the house in a bathing suit. Astrid remembered Stoick showing her a plastic Viking helmet he had bought to seem 'COOL' to his grandchild. She had watched him strap it on his head and then take a running start on the slip and slide. Only.................. Stoick didn't stop.

Not only didn't Stoick stop, he kept going.... And going.... And going, until his Viking helmet, horns included, met the wooden fence. And then he still kept going. Astrid remembered Stoick being stuck halfway in the fence as Valka and Gobber tried to pull him free while Hiccup had to explain what happened to their neighbours. Lovely middle-aged couple by the way. They had a son in Highschool who was a bit of a loner but the boy offered to do some yard work for them and the rest of the neighbourhood so he could afford a scooter.

"Again... why wasn't this fixed days ago?" Astrid asked as she noticed Hiccup try to avoid answering.

"Well.... I went to the Home Depot to get wood and I totally would have if I wasn't so distracted." Hiccup answered. "I was looking at prices when I got bowled over by Eret who was screaming at a chicken to cease and desist." She watched Hiccup reach for his back pocket where he pulled out his phone and showed her a video. "I ended up recording part of the chase because it was so hilarious."
