I had a feeling I was being watched again, It was a feeling I knew all too well, I’d been having that same feeling since the day I turned seventeen, only then I didn’t know why, now I do and I had tried to get away from it, and still am, I was tired of running, but I knew that if I stopped my life would change forever.
That same feeling that had been bugging me for day’s now was telling me that it was time to run again, and on to a different place this time, maybe even a different country, I gathered my laptop from the booth table and took one final sip of my coffee before leaving the small diner, looking both ways before stepping out of the diner, I made a quick right heading back to my hotel room.
As I walked past an alley, I thought I saw something flash by, going into the darkest part, I stopped and looked down the alley, not daring to go any further, as I squinted my eyes trying to get a better look, the feeling that I was being watched intensified and I had a feeling that whatever was watching me was on the other end of the alley, I took a step back and started walking fast to my hotel room, looking back to make sure that if there had been anything in that ally that it wasn’t fallowing me.
I took a deep breath to try and calm my nerves, I needed to chill out before I panicked, nothing came out of panicking anyway, as I reached my room door the owner of the hotel came out and nodded to me, “So how are you liking our town so far Sarah” the short bald man asked me.
I smiled at him, “I like it, but I’m afraid that I have to move on tonight”, I told him, and his kind smile faltered.
“Oh I see, do you think you’ll be back” he asked his eyes kind of sad, I knew the feeling, over the past couple of weeks I had bounded with him and his wife, I didn’t want to leave, but once again I had too, “Of course I will”, I lied, and we both knew it.
He gave me a reassuring smile, “I’ll tell the Missus that you said good bye, and while your packing I guess I’ll take care of all the charges”, he said, and I smiled at him as he went back into his office, maybe one day I would come back, when my life wasn’t from one hotel room to the next and when I wasn’t running from a demon.
I knew I had to pack quickly so I stuffed the cloths that I had into my small bag, going around the room I put everything I owned in my bag once again, I would miss the Cane family, they had been so nice to me from the moment I had rode into town looking for a place to stay, they had taken me in, fed me and gave me a place to sleep, I was grateful to them and I always would be.
They had treated me like a daughter and now I felt like I was doing a hit and run, I felt tears sting the back of my eye lids, but I blinked them away before I finished packing.
I closed the door to the room and locked it with the key I had, making my way to the office I stopped by my junky car and but my bag in the back seat, then I walked into Mr. Cane’s office, taking a deep breath it smelt like melted honey and roses.
Mr. Cane sat behind the desk, and smiled at me when I walked in, “I have everything in order, now all you have to do is sigh at the dotted line”, he said handing me a pin.
I grabbed the pin and scribbled my name on the line, “Thank you for letting me stay here Mr. Cane”, I told him, he just came around the desk and gave me a hug, as I left the office I felt the tears start to sting the back of my eye lids once again.
