As Mya continued to stand around the corner, her heart began to race. Not only did she just find out that Jason had a crush on Miley McKenna, a Pinewood freshman who was a local pastor's daughter, which was huge enough on its own, but she also just found out that Travis liked her. As Mya thought about this, she heard Travis and Jason finish their conversation and begin walking towards the hall. Mya quickly darted into the bathroom and locked the door. She heard Travis and Jason continue to talk about the hockey game that morning at Pinewood as they passed the bathroom. Once Mya was sure the boys were out of earshot, she turned her attention to how she looked.
Her hair was a mess after a night of sleeping on the floor with no pillow. Still unaware of how she had slept curled up in Travis's arms, she was surprised that she wasn't sore or tired. Checking the clock on her phone, Mya saw that everyone has 2 hours before they had to be back at Crombeen Arena for the game. Relieved that she had that much time, Mya turned towards the shower behind her and turned the knob to warm, letting steam fill the small bathroom. She slowly pulled off the clothes she had slept in and gingerly stepped into the shower. The warm water hit her small frame and woke her up a bit more. As Mya began to wash her hair, she continued thinking about Travis. The guy she had liked since the start of 8th grade year actually liked her back.
Back in Travis's room, Jason was laying down on Travis's bed while Travis began to pack his hockey bag for the day's game. As Travis packed, Jason glanced at him and began to speak.
"So, you actually like Mya?" Jason asked.
"Yeah man, I really do. She's sweet, funny, kind, honest, friendly, cute, and more," Travis replied as he gently set his shoulder and arm pads into his big green duffel bag.
"Oh jeeeez," Jason groaned, "It's like a Hallmark movie here," he concluded.
"Oh shut up," Travis snapped back as he set his sharpened skates into the bag.
"Fine, Fine...Who do you guys play today?" Jason asked, changing the subject.
"Mercy Prep, the old Catholic school from Colorado Springs," Travis replied, tossing his gloves into the bag.
"They any good?" Jason countered.
"Well, they're not bad, but they're not what I would call good," Travis said tossing his helmet into the bag and zipping it up.
"You gonna win?" Jason asked.
"Heck yeah," Travis replied, slinging the heavy bag over his shoulder and making his way towards the front door. As he set the bag down, Mya walked into the living room. Her hair was tied up in a messy bun with multiple strands hanging down around her face. She wore a black, long sleeve shirt with a pair of blue jeans. What Travis missed entirely was the fact that Mya's cheeks were red as a tomato when she saw Travis. Soon after this, Jason made his way down wearing a Pinewood Hockey sweatshirt in support of his best friend. Kenzie was the last of the four friends to be ready to go. Her black hair was curled and gently tossed behind her shoulders. Once everyone was ready to go, the four friends made their way out into the cold winter streets of Aspen as they made their way to the bus stop.
Once the friends arrived and Crombeen Arena, they went off in separate directions. Travis made his way to the dressing room to prepare for the game. Jason went off to the concession stand to get some snacks for the game. That left Kenzie who headed off towards the friends seats for the game. Mya quickly ran after Kenzie, eager to tell her about what she had heard that morning.
"Kenzie, wait up," Mya called as she caught up to Kenzie.
"Hey, what's up," Kenzie asked.
"Travis said he likes me this morning," Mya said, excitement hanging on every word she spoke.
"Wait, really?" Kenzie asked, her voice on edge with excitement as well.
"Yeah, he and Jason were talking in the kitchen and Travis said he liked me," Mya responded with glee.
"That's awesome Mya," Kenzie replied, smiling at her friend.
As the two made their way to the seats, they continued talking about Travis...that is until they saw who was standing near their normal seats. Somehow Jason had beaten them to their seats, even though he was bogged down with food.
"Ok, I've got a pretzel and cheese for our champion figure skater," Jason said as he passed Mya the warm pretzel. "A nacho bowl for the doggies skaters friend," Jason continued as he passed Kenzie her nachos. "And that leaves a hot dog for the best friend you could ask for," Jason concluded.
"But Kenzie is my best friend," Mya quipped with a small laugh as she took a bite of her pretzel.
"Wow, after I just bought you a pretzel?" Jason asked with a fake sense of shock.
"Yep," Mya laughed as she turned her attention to the ice where it would stay for the next 2 hours.
The second game of the year for Pinewood flew by, with the Hawks picking up a resounding 6-0 win. To no one's surprise, Travis dominated the game scoring 3 goals and picking up an assist. As the horde of excited fans made their way out of the arena, Mya, Jason, and Kenzie all waited outside of the dressing room for Travis. Eventually he came out wearing sweatpants and a Pinewood sweatshirt. As he walked out, he turned to Jason.
"Hey man, have you shown Kenzie the new vending machine in the lobby?" Travis asked with a slight hitch in his breath, still tired from the game.
"What, no...why would I?" Jason asked, confused. The he saw Travis glance at Mya and he understood.
"Oh yeah...Hey Kenzie, you wanna go see the new vending machine?" Jason quick let asked Kenzie.
"Wait...what...why?" Kenzie asked.
"Oh no reason, just come take a look," Jason continued as he lead a confused Kenzie towards the arena's lobby. Once they had left, Mya turned to Travis.
"Smooth," she joked sarcastically.
"Why thank you," Travis replied.
"So what's up?" Mya asked as she brushed a strand of lose hair behind her ear in the way that Travis has grown to adore over the past 3 weeks.
"Well, over the past few weeks we've been hanging out a lot more and I really like that...and I was wondering if you'd...like to get a cup of coffee sometime this week?" Travis shyly asked.
"Like a date?" Mya asked, a small smile forming in her lips.
"...Yeah," Travis responded.
"I'd love to," Mya replied.
"Wait, really?" Travis asked, he to smiling now.
"Yeah," Mya sweetly replied as the pair made their way towards one of Crombeen Arena's many exits.
