The mice were really Allura's right-hand-creatures. So they always were around, per her orders, making sure you were safe. You eventually got used to the little mice, actually finding it quite useful, because you could set up situations to get Lance in trouble from Allura, like now. When Lance hit on you, it travelled through the mice right to Allura herself, who wasn't happy.
