Chapter 3

Daryl's P.O.V

"Hey Shane I'm going out hunting"

"Alright Daryl, Merle, Glenn, and a few others going on a run"

"Yeah, I'll be back in two days man"

Shane nodded as I headed off into the woods, Merle was already in the car ready to go. Merle and I really haven't been the same since Maria went missing, we just sit around and barely speak and when we do, everyone is speechless. Mainly because it was a rare thing to hear us speak to anyone unless it was harsh words. I'm not harsh to everyone but since Maria disappeared I haven't been so nice, she always brought out the good in me and god did I miss it.

Maria's P.O.V

I was sitting down on a small purple blanket that Darcy had found for me, she got me some clothes and a lot of food to hold in my bag. she taught me how to defend myself if she can't get to me in time, daddy did teach me how to hunt before this all happened and I told her that. She was impressed and for me, a smaller crossbow like daddy had and said to be careful. I used to have one like this but I left it behind at Daddy's house. I liked being with Darcy, she treated me like her own daughter, she held me at night when I couldn't sleep, she protected me all the time, and she helped me with everything I needed. Darcy was right now trying to get into a store where she saw people go into and she was having trouble so she started knocking. no one would open up for her so she started telling them she had a kid with her and that she had to get inside. then there was a strange man with a red hat who came to the door and let us in. I grabbed my blanket and jumped into Darcy's arms.

"Is she your daughter?" the man asked

"not really but I treat her like she is"

"if she's not your daughter then....."

"I found her in a tree trying to get away from walkers so I saved her and promised I would help her try and find her daddy"

he nodded and walked over to a small group of people, a blonde-headed woman came over when Darcy placed me down on a countertop.

"I'm Andrea, what's your name little one?"

"Maria"

"What a pretty name, do you like the woman that brought you here?"

"yes, she protects me, feeds me, gets me things I need, and treats me like I'm hers even though I'm not"

"she sounds amazing"

"she is, I wish Daddy could meet her, they would like each other a lot"

"Why do you say that?"

"Well, for one Daddy likes any woman that treats me the way she has, and second because she is really pretty and Daddy is really handsome"

"oh I bet"

"where's Darcy?"

"she went to go get you something really quick"

I sat at the edge of the counter and began to swing my feet back and forth, I missed Daddy so much, I miss when he would wake me up by singing our song, and how he would play airplanes with me before bed. I miss Daddy holding me at night when I had a nightmare. I miss him more than anything.

"Hey, Maria look at what I found!"

I turned my head to see Darcy see a beautiful necklace in her hand, I saw that there were three charms on it, one was a motorcycle like Daddy had, one was a wing-like on Daddy's vest, and the other was a crossbow like daddy used for hunting.

"I found the charms behind the counter and I remember you telling me that your daddy had wings and that he had a bike, and a crossbow so I put them together so you have something to remember your daddy by till we find him"

I smiled and let her put it around my neck, once she clicked it in place I turned around and hugged her tightly.

"thank you, I will wear it always"

she smiled kissed my nose and told me to sit back down a be patient while she helped the other gather some supplies for their group. during that time we heard gunshots and walkers started coming at the doors, Darcy grabbed me and held on to me tightly telling me that everything was going to be fine. that's when that red-cap guy came back out of breath with some guy who was dressed like an officer. Andrea the blonde girl put a gun on the officer and started getting mad at him, the man pointed to me and Andrea instantly put the gun down. She showed him the walkers coming at the door and said it was his fault. he started trying to help us come up with a plan to get out.

"Hey there, I'm T-Dog"

I nodded and waved "I'm Maira"

The one with the red cap smiled and waved "I'm Glenn"

"Hi, I'm Maria"

The cop was next and he smiled "Hi sweetheart, I'm Rick"

"Hello, I'm Maria"

They all smiled and shook my small hand and continued to come up with a plan. For a while, they had gone to the roof when they heard gunshots and I covered my ears. Darcy started to sing to me, the song Daddy always sang to me when I was scared or needed to go to sleep. I was curious as to how she knew but decided not to ask. She's just trying to be nice.

There are two things I know for sure

She was sent here from heaven

And she's daddy's little girl

As I drop to my knees by her bed at night

She talks to Jesus and I close my eyes

And I thank God for all of the joy in my life

Oh but most of all

For butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer

Stickin' little white flowers all up in her hair

I laid my head down on her chest and fell asleep in her arms. Thinking of my daddy again.
