Chapter 5

Darcy's P.O.V                 

Dale let me and Maria stay in the RV. Maria kept getting up in the middle of the night having a nightmare saying she would never find her daddy. I decided to stay up and hold her while she tried to go back to sleep, but the poor thing couldn't sleep so I decided to sing to her one of my favorite songs.

When your legs don't work like they used to before

And I can't sweep you off your feet.
Will your mouth still remember the taste of my love?
Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks?

A smile spread across Maria's face as she snuggled closer to my chest. She wrapped her small arms around my stomach. The signs of sleepiness began to appear in her eyes. In a moment, she kissed my cheek and lied her head over my heart, allowing the rhythm to lull her to sleep

And we found love right where we are

The next morning when I woke up, Maria was still sleeping, her arms wrapped around me tightly. I kissed her head and told her it was time to get up. She yawned and opened her gorgeous blue eyes and smiled.

"Morning Maria"

"Morning mama"

After stumbling and freezing, I looked down at her, she seemed worried almost and stood up quickly to apologize. I smiled and calmed her down.

"it's alright, but if we find your daddy I don't think you should be calling me that"

"OK, for now, can I? You are kind of like a mama to me!"

"Alright, for now."

She smiled and got up from the bed and went to change in the bathroom into her clothes. I switched my shirt to a tank top and put on a pair of shorts. When Maria came out, her pants were way too long, especially in this kind of heat. I grabbed her and placed her on the bed and searched for scissors and some sewing needles. I marked a spot on her knees and told her to take them off. Once she had them off and handed them to me I cut at the line on both legs and folded the cut part and sewed the folded part to the jeans so they wouldn't fall. Maria slipped them on and it was a lot better. Her shirt had long sleeves so I cut off the sleeves and made sure to sew them so any loose strands of fabric didn't get caught on anything.

"Thank you, mama. Now I don't feel so hot."

"you're welcome sweetie. Now let's go outside and you can go play with Carl and Sophia"

Maria smiled and ran out of the RV as fast as her short legs could carry her. I walked out and asked if there was anything I could help with. Dale pointed me to Lori who needed help with laundry so I went to help her.

"Why do you look so troubled there Darcy?"

I sighed "Maria called me mama this morning and I told her it was fine but when we find her daddy she shouldn't call me that"

She smiled "did you ever want kids?"

"I was planning on it one day, I just don't want to break her little heart when she finally finds her daddy and he doesn't like that fact she is calling me mama"

"I know honey..... I think her father will be happy that someone took good care of her when she needed it"

"I hope so."

She patted my shoulder and then we heard screams. It sounded just like Maria when I found her in the woods. I ran as quickly as I could with Lori right behind me. I found her running to us with Carl and Sophia, I grabbed her and pulled her to me asking what was wrong, she pointed towards the direction they came from and that's where the men ran towards that direction. I picked her up and carried her back to camp and placed her in the RV. I calmed her down and she told me what she saw. I shushed her and rocked her back and forth. I heard yelling outside and continued to hold her in my arms. Maria picked up her head and looked out the window and about jumped out of my arms.

"It's daddy!!!"

"What do you mean darling?"

"Daddy's outside"

I turned around and saw a man I had never seen before. He was wearing a shirt with sleeves missing and was carrying a crossbow and his vest had angel wings on it just like Maria had described. My eyes widened and I smiled. She was finally going to see her daddy again.

I let her climb out of my lap and run to the door. As soon as she opened the door her normally soft and timid voice became very loud as she yelled.

"Daddy!!!"

The man turned and he dropped his crossbow onto the ground when he saw her. You could tell by the look in his eyes that he was about to cry.

"M-Maria!?"

He dropped to his knees as she ran up to him and hugged him tightly. I smiled while everyone else looked completely shocked. He pulled away from her and kissed her all over her face and held her to him again.

"I'm never letting you go again, never. Where have you been Butterfly?"

"With Darcy, she found me in the woods and saved me from those walkers......she even gave me this necklace so when I missed you I had something to remind me of you"

He looked down at the necklace and smiled. She hugged him again and kissed his cheek.

"That was very nice of 'er, now who's Darcy?"

I was leaning against the RV when she pointed at me and smiled. She got out of her dad's arms and ran over to me and hugged my hip. I smiled and got down to her level and hugged her too. Her dad came over and smiled at me.

"Thank you for looking out for my little girl."

I smiled and nodded. He pulled me into a hug and thanked me again and then looked down at Maria and picked her up. He held out his hand for a shake.

"My name is Daryl."

"And as you know I'm Darcy. I'm glad she finally has her daddy back"

"I'm so glad to have her back too, I don't know how to repay you for taking care of her while I couldn't"

"Well, I still would love to still be able to hang out with my little buddy if that's alright?"

"I'm more than okay with that."
