Third Pov

"Tell me more about the life of a Breeder. After Breeders are born between Mamas and a male, what then?" Ray asked.

"The baby is transferred to the Breeders' Farm and is taken care of until they become a year old. Then, depending on their parent's decision, the baby is either sent to a Breeders' Farm or to a regular farm- if it's female. Males are sent off to regular farms once they become a year old." Erica replied.

"What about you?"

"In my case, I was taken care of by my mother until I was six. Then she passed away, so I was given the choice. I chose to become a Breeder."

"And your dad?"

"My father escaped, but he chose to ditch me for some reason. Because of that, he set my goals in life quite well."

Despite having told Ray that she had been abandoned by her father and her mother had been killed by who and for what- Erica's voice was lighthearted and nonchalant. She shrugged, before smiling.

"Don't pity me, Ray. I rather appreciate the fact that my father abandoned me. It made me stronger."

Ray kept his remarks to himself.

"If the baby becomes a Breeder, they stay at the Breeders' Farm and live there until they become eighteen. Then they're sent to the Breeding Farm, where they spend the rest of their life bearing kids."

"How does a Partner come into all this?"

"Of course, the Partner doesn't know what exactly his job is. It's not like they give you sexual education at a farm." Erica scoffed, snickering at Ray's increasingly red face.

"A Partner is told of their use and job at the gates. They are given two choices. Make children for the rest of your able days, or die and become Demon food. But since young children can't understand the responsibility and heavy thinking required to understand his job as a Partner, only fully-grown twelve-year-old males with highest scores are given the choice." She continued.

"But even then, some aren't given the choice at all."

Ray stiffened. He'd been silently working the onslaught of new information into the escape plan he had so far- and becoming a Partner in order to lengthen his ticking time-bomb life was his safety net upon failure of escape. But if there was even the slightest chance of him not being given the option of becoming a Partner, then he had to take the chance.

"It depends on the number of Partners at the Breeding Farm. A Breeder can have up to two Partners at most. So if all Breeders have one Partner, the boy won't be given the choice. But if a new crop of Breeders came in and they need Partners, then the Guards will recruit new Partners."

"It's so complicated. Why bother with the extra steps?" He grunted, frowning.

"They didn't use to be this lenient in the past. But they had to change things when Breeders and Partners died off or bore unhealthy children due to STDs and unhealthy living quarters. Breeders and Partners used to share each other, you know. But not anymore." Erica explained, lying down on the sunny grass with one arm over her eyes.

"The Demons realized that emotional happiness and quality of life mattered a lot in order for Breeders to have healthy children. So they gave them a lot more benefits. Not like it matters, though."

"The ending is always death- one way or another." She finished.

".....You said that a Breeder can have up to two Partners, right?" Ray started.

"Yeah."

"Make me your second Partner."

"Why? You wanna have kids with me?"

Only to give them away to be grown and eaten like livestock? Her silent words spoke.

"I want to survive, if my escape plan doesn't work," Ray answered, fixing his gaze on the small female basking in the sunlight.

.....But I don't think I'd mind having kids with you.

Breeders' Farm: Farm where Breeders live/grow until the age of 18. Also where the newborn babies are taken care of until they reach the age of 1.

Breeding Farm: Farm where Breeders and their Partners live; where all the frisky time goes down

Note: It's named "Farm", but it's more like a village. Within an enclosed space (Like Grace Field Orphanage) filled with houses, a Partner and a Breeder are assigned to a house and they live there. Doctors and Nurses check in every month.

The two farms have different names and uses, but it's a large building and an enclosed town connected by a large hallway/bridge. One side is the Breeders' Farm, the other is the Breeding Farm. Both are kept under close watch.

When someone in the Breeding Farm has a baby, someone from the said farm brings the child over to the Breeders' Farm.

The 12-year-old boys who choose to become Partners are brought into the Breeders' Farm and are trained until they reach 18. Then they're paired off with a Breeder and are sent to the Breeding Farm.

This chapter was an information dump! Comment any questions, if any! Erica will be explaining this once more to Emma and Norman later on. This will be explained to Don and Guilda later on, as well. But it won't be Erica who explains.
