Norman Pov
May the Lord have mercy on me. I thought, changing seats with Ray.
"But I can do it too..." Ray grumbled, which was ignored by everyone but Emma.
"Aww~ Did you want to take care of Erica, Ray? That's so nice of you!!"
"If he was the one taking care of me, I'd starve to death," Erica grunted, making Ray give her a glare.
"What? Judging by your actions, that was your intentions, aren't I right?"
"Stop trying to start a fight with Ray, Erica. Just... here." I said, pushing a spoonful of curry into her mouth.
At first, she didn't show any traces of emotion on her face. Then a cute blush rose onto her pale cheeks, followed by sparkles and pink flowers as a pleased hum made itself known. Gosh, she's adorable when she's blushing...
Wait, did I just call her cute?
Nah. It's probably just my imagination. A slip of the tongue, that's all...
"This is good," Erica commented loudly, making Don's head perk up from the next table over.
"Really? Thanks!!"
"Good food deserves good praise, Don. Tell Guilda that, too."
"I wonder how she'll react when she gets a taste of Norman's food..." Emma whispered to Ray, who just blankly nodded in agreement.
"She may be saying that it tastes nice because Norman's the one feeding her," Ray commented, shocking innocent Emma.
"Eh?! That's possible?"
I sweatdropped and decided to ignore my friends' conversation for now. It was making me blush too much. Instead, I turned back to Erica who was doing a weird, wavy dance move with an idiotic smile on her face.
Cute...
Gosh darn it, I'm doing it again!
I quickly pushed all thoughts of Erica out of my mind and focused on feeding her the rest of her curry.
"I'll feed you when you're hurt and can't use your arm. You know, to repay for the favour." Erica said, giving me a smile that wasn't empty for the first time.
"It's my fault for you getting hurt. I should be helping you." I replied.
"At least someone in this friend group takes responsibility for their actions," Erica muttered, giving Ray a playful glare.
Ray grunted in reply. Emma snickered loudly, stuffing her own face with food.
"All right, last bite."
Once Erica was done with her food, I focused on my own meal. Emma took Erica's dirty dishes for her, which was appreciated by the female.
"Aren't you going to leave?" I asked, taking notice of how Erica wasn't leaving for free time.
"But then you'd be lonely."
I stiffened at Erica's words, completely surprised by the sudden but pleasant act of goodwill. She gave me a playful smile- another proof of the fact that she wasn't completely void of emotions.
We were enveloped in peaceful silence as I continued to finish my meal, Erica by my side. It feels nice... to not eat alone, I realized.
Ever since I was younger, I often got sick due to my weak body. It included a lot of days where I was forced to eat and be alone in the infirmary. I didn't think that it could feel so pleasant to just have someone be there with you.
"Hey, lovebirds. Guess what." Ray spoke, breaking the silence around us.
"L- Lovebirds?!"
"Chicken butt."
"There's something weird outside. It's big and covered with some kind of sheet. Then there's another smaller box. Mom says that they're for you, Erica."
I quickly shovelled the rest of the food in my mouth, placed the dirty plate and utensils in the sink to clean later, and went outside to see what Ray was talking about.
The two objects were placed in the middle of the grassy meadow, clear for all to see- even from far away. The entire orphanage was surrounding the said "something weird", except for Mom and kids under five. Erica approached the large one, placing the smaller box onto the ground.
Without a moment of hesitation, she pulled the black sheet off of the object, revealing some kind of weirdly shaped box on three legs, paired with a stool.
"Do you know what this is, Erica?" Emma asked, not being able to take her eyes off of the object in front of her.
"It's so black and shiny!!"
"It's so big!!"
"What is it, Erica?"
The children chimed, pelting Erica with questions. She only gave us a mysterious smile as she opened the top of the box, as well as the front. Then she took a seat on the stool and placed her hands on the black-and-white keys in front of her.
Everyone fell silent as a soothing, pleasant sound emitted out of the black box, Erica's slender fingers moving across the keyboard with experienced precision.
