"Hey there. You looked like you needed some help."
Fumiko swivelled around to see who the voice belonged to. A boy with dark, greyish-green hair looked down at her. Tiny freckles spotted his cheeks, brightening when he flushed and said with a sheepish grin, "Sorry if I surprised you, you just looked like you were struggling."
Fumiko smiled. "No, thank you, really. I did need some help there." They walked together.
"No problem! My name's Yamaguchi." he beamed. "Which class are you in?"
"My name's Kageyama. I'm in 1-C, you?"
"Same here!"- his smile faltered as he checked his watch-" I'm so sorry but I have to go check out my volleyball club right now, the captain-""It's cool! Go ahead; I can carry these." Fumiko flashed him a reassuring smile as she shifted her arms, taking the books from him.
Waving her off, Yamaguchi set off in the opposite direction, towards the volleyball court. Fumiko's textbooks were piled high on her arms, trembling precariously as she walked towards her class. She carried a more significant number of books since she was taking an advanced course at Karasuno. Man, Fumiko thought, why does my bag have to rip today of all days... Lost in thought, she nearly passed by her classroom post with the "1-C" imprinted onto the label above the door. Jolting herself back to reality, she took a sharp turn on her heel into the classroom, swerving and narrowly avoiding stumbling into the door frame. Consequently, in all the motion, her books tipped over and spilt onto the ground. Groaning, Fumiko tucked a piece of hair behind her ear and set to pick them up when she heard a voice from above her.
"Bowing to me already, are we? Now, I'm not really into tutoring, but I'm sure I could make an exception with such enthusiasm. We are an advanced class, after all. "
Fumiko scowled. Without even looking up, she could make out the smirk behind the voice. Without pausing a beat, she retorted-" The only time I'll be bowing to you is out of pity, when you lose to me." A smile started to form on her lips. " This is an advanced class, after all.", she said.
"Oh, What is this? Lose to me, you say? Well, let's get this straight, book girl. I don't lose to anyone, especially not to the likes of a floor monger like you."
Deliberately collecting her books slowly, Fumiko finally looked up to see who was talking to her. A tall figure looked down at her; all traces of a smile on his face was now gone. The boy, formerly smirking, clenched his jaw and ran a hand through his flaxen hair agitatedly. Someone can't handle being put in his place, thought Fumiko. Seeing an opportunity, she smirked. "Has Mr Confident lost his cool already? Could it be I threaten you, blondie?" her voice dripped with mockery. Living with Tobio, she'd always gotten a good laugh out of irritating him whenever she was bored; So it was safe to say that she, Fumiko Kageyama, was a master of insinuation. In other words, she'd always made sure that anyone who messed with her (or Tobio) would get their due payment.
The boy stalked off to his seat, evidently exasperated with her response. Just as Fumiko wondered where she should sit, the dark-haired boy from before ran into the classroom, his face flushed and forehead beaded with sweat. He managed to get out an "Oh, hey Kageyama-san!" before collapsing into his seat, breathless.
Fumiko waved-" Hi Yamaguchi-san!"-before settling into the seat beside him. As she started to organise her books, she saw the blond boy in the corner of her eye. He leaned over to Yamaguchi and whispered not-so-quietly, "You know that annoying girl?"
Yamaguchi frowned, perplexed. "Well yeah, Tsukki, I helped her carry her books for a while because her bag ripped, and don't call her that. It isn't nice."
Tsukishima grumbled, "If anything's ripped, it's her synapses." (authors note: synapses are connections between brain cells)
Hearing this, Fumiko whipped her head around and glared at him. He glared back, and they both sat there glowering at each other; Yamaguchi, sitting in between them, chuckled uneasily. "So um... I should probably introduce you guys." He shifted in his seat, sensing the obvious tension hanging in the air.
He turned towards the blond boy and gestured to Fumiko. "Tsukki, meet Kageyama-san. I helped her carry her books to class today."
"Oh, we've met," he muttered under his breath.
Yamaguchi continued, "And Kageyama-san, this is Tsukishima-kun." He beamed. "And I hope we can all get along and be friends! Alright?"
Tsukishima muttered inaudibly while Fumiko, for Yamaguchi's sake, agreed. "Sure, Yamaguchi-san."
She sighed and leaned on her arm, staring into space. This Tsukishima guy seems like a real piece of shit, she thought. She couldn't believe that someone as kind and cheerful as Yamaguchi could hang around someone like him. No, she thought. Who was she to judge who people wanted to hang out with? God knows she's made some questionable choices in the past that didn't have the most...optimal results. Pushing the thought out of her mind, Fumiko shuffled around some papers, searching for her timetable. Scanning it with her eyes, she landed on Monday's schedule. First period, biology. Biology lab. Great, she thought. Partners were never really Fumiko's forte. So lab experiments and group projects were automatically a no-go. Before she could find a way to make an excuse and escape frantically, the teacher's voice cut through the air- "Good morning, class. I'm sure everyone has had a great summer, so it's time to get to work. In today's lab, you are required to work in pairs. I will be splitting you up."
Fumiko made to leave the room but stopped when she heard the teacher call out her name.
"Kageyama Fumiko will be partnered with Tsukishima Kei."
