A Thoughtful Afternoon

"Hey, you okay there miss?" a mop of unruly orange hair peeked from behind her shoulder.

Fumiko froze as tears threatened to spill out onto her cheeks. Drying her eyes with her hand, she turned to see who was talking to her.

A boy, only about an inch shorter than her, peered at Fumiko curiously. He tilted his head to the side and squinted at her.

"You were shaking, are you dizzy? You don't look very good."

Fumiko, surprised at this boy's bluntness, stammered out an answer. "Y-yes, I'm good. Don't worry about it!" She flashed a quick smile and hurried back to her classroom with her books before he could ask her anything else.

Good grief, thought Fumiko. She had no idea how much time she had spent there, alone in that lab. If it wasn't for that bright orange-haired boy, she might have spent hours spiraling into her own thoughts. Down, down, down...

A familiar leering voice brought her back to reality.

"Ha! Look who it is! Have fun in detention, book girl." Tsukishima towered over her, smirking. Yamaguchi stood defeatedly behind him, shaking his head.

Fumiko raised an eyebrow. "Have you forgotten that you got detention too?" Immediately she regretted asking. Tsukishima was positively brimming with glee at the question.

"I, got out of detention because I convinced them that it was all you. And now you have an extra half hour. Have fun, loser." Tsukishima had a smug look of pride.

Fumiko scowled. "I'd rather sit there for four hours alone than a half hour with you." she spat.

Before Tsukishima could retort with another scathing remark, Yamaguchi stepped in between them.

"None of us want more detention, and none of us want to miss our club activities. So let's all just get along, and no one has to get in more trouble. You know what? I need both of your help for a project tomorrow. Tsukki, your house is good right? Great. Tomorrow at 5 pm it is." With that, he promptly sat down between them with a sense of finality. Yamaguchi, always playing the role of the mediator.

Acknowledging their defeat, Fumiko and Tsukishima sat down on either side of Yamaguchi. When she was sure that Tsukishima wouldn't be listening, Fumiko leaned towards Yamaguchi. She asked in a low tone," Why is he always such a goddamn prick? I don't get why you hang out with him, you're too good for him."

Yamaguchi raised an eyebrow, surprised at her bluntness.

"Tsukki isn't so bad once you get to know him, you know."

He cast a furtive glance towards Tsukishima, who was busy arranging his backpack.

"Once I had an-" he coughed "-an unpleasant encounter with a couple of bullies in grade school, and he basically got rid of them for me. And ya know, he has issues of his own." He wagged a finger at her jokingly.

"So don't be so quick to judge him, alright? He takes a little getting used to."

Fumiko glanced at Tsukishima, who was agonizing over a missing pencil. He turned towards her, pointing accusatorily.

"Where is it? I know you're desperate, book girl but that doesn't mean you can go around stealing my stuff." He paused, donning his signature smug look. "It isn't going to make me like you, if that's what you're trying to accomplish."

Fumiko sighed and extended her middle finger at him. It was hard to believe someone as self-righteous as him could do anything decent, let alone selfless.
