I opened the front door of my shared house with Charlie, a baby dragon wrapped in a blanket in my arms and stepped inside. “Charlie!” I shouted, closing the door with my foot. “In the bedroom!” He yelled back and I dropped everything in my hands except the dragon onto the kitchen table before gently kicking the bedroom door open.

The dragon had been born a few days ago but as the runt of the litter had been neglected by the mother. When this happens, one of the workers has to take the baby home and care for it until it can be reintroduced to its mother. This time it was me.

“So this little guy has been neglected by his mother and I hope it’s okay but we-” I started talking, his eyes went wide and landed on the sleeping dragon in my arms, “please tell me we get to look after him.” He said excitedly, interrupting me and rushing over to take him off me.

“Yeah we do and we get to pick a name.” I said, admiring how he held the creature securely against his chest. Charlie seemed to be more excited than me, it was always his dream to work with dragons and now he has one in his house that he gets to take care of for a few weeks.

“Well he’s a Common Welsh Green, right?” He looked at me for confirmation and I nodded my head, “Charlie Junior!” He suggested caressing his hand over it’s head. I scoffed, “not a chance. He needs his own name.”

I stood thinking about all the names we could call it for a few minutes but I couldn’t come up with anything fitting, “what about Arrow?” Charlie proposed the name. I looked over shoulder down at the baby dragon and pictured myself calling him Arrow. It seemed a perfect fit. “I love it.” I admitted and smiled up at my husband.

He matched my features until his face fell a few moments later, “Oh my godric I need to get some things, I’ll be back soon love.” Charlie said, handing me Arrow and kissing my cheek. “Wait where are you going?” I asked, a little confused as to what just happened.

“I need to get some stuff for him, he’s my first child y/n. He’s getting spoilt.” He told me as if it was obvious, I started to laugh at his claim. I knew charlie would be excited and happy about it but I didn’t expect him to call Arrow his first child, deep down I knew he wasn’t serious.

At least I hoped he wasn’t.

He walked out the front door, to go godric knows exactly where and I found a comfortable position on the sofa making sure Arrow was also comfortable as he continued to sleep against my chest, nuzzling into my body for the heat. It was an adorable sight that made my heart melt. I never wanted the moment to end, it was so peaceful and calming as I felt the weight of the world slip away.

I must have fallen asleep as I jolted awake to the front door shutting, I looked down to check on Arrow and he was still sleeping to my surprise because Charlie wasn’t exactly quiet as he came in but then again, Arrow was only a few days old and needed a lot of sleep.

“Did you get everything you needed?” I asked with a small laugh, yawning and sitting up properly. “Yeah, look I got some toys, a little cushion bed, blankets, bottles and a baby carrier!” He pulled things out of the bags to show me and then pointed to a cardboard box which I assumed had the carrier in it.

“Charlie, my love, this is great and all but why would we need a baby carrier?” I questioned in a humorous tone. I understood why he bought the toys, blankets, the bed and even the bottles. We needed those to hand feed Arrow his milk as he wasn’t old enough to eat food yet but the baby carrier, I had no idea why he bought that.
