In 1861 somewhere in April, I joined the confederacy. I had just barely finished my apprenticeship as a doctor, when the civil war broke out. Ready or not, father told me to join the confederacy. I just wanted to help, any way I could. So I did. Whether it was as a soldier or a doctor, didn't really matter to me. I wanted to safe lives. That is why I became a doctor in the first place.  It hurt to leave everything behind. My brothers, my father, my girlfriend, my friends.... But I had to do this, I had to leave, I had to help.... I said my goodbye's. My fate signed the minute I stepped foot on the battlefield. Although I hoped I was wrong.

I have my younger brother, my twin brother, my father and....  My one and true love... Ella Prince. We've been friends since we were only children, young  and unaware of the dangers of the world. I met her when I was seven and since then she has always been by my side. And suddenly two became three, because I'm a twin and me and my brother did everything together. My twin brother used to make fun of it. Me and Ella I mean. He knew I liked her, everyone in town knew, except for her. Never did I have any idea that I was being that obvious. When I was fourteen I finally told her that I was in love her and we've been together ever since. And about two months ago.... I bought a ring. I was going to ask her to marry me, but then.... the war happened and I had to go. She doesn't even know... I wish I had never left. But I did, I had no choice. I just hope that someday... I will see her again.

Night and day, they all felt the same while on the battlefield. I had no Idea how long I had been here. Every day was the same. The smell of smoke, blood and death polluted the air. More gunshots, more bombings, more wounded soldiers and an awful lot of casualties. The first few months were the hardest, I felt guilty for everyone I couldn't safe. I still do. It never got any better and the war just kept on going. It felt like it would never end. Everyday I lived, everyday  I prayed and every single day I thanked the Gods for being alive. I always prayed that one day I would return home. But the hope of doing so, slimmed each day that I stayed.

I have gotten close to some of my fellow soldiers. We have each other's backs. I have long forgotten how long I've been here, how long I've survived without getting hit by the rain of bullets and bombs.

I grabbed the ring that I carry in a necklace around my neck. It was a swirly silver band with a beautiful blue sapphire right in the middle. I close my eyes and smile, gripping it tightly. The ring I bought for my girlfriend, weeks before I left. It was the one thing keeping me alive, the one thing that kept me fighting and kept me from losing hope.

"James! Look out!" I hear someone shout, but it was too late. There was an explosion, a ringing in my ears.
I felt myself falling and for a moment everything seemed to slow down. Moments after I hit the ground. I couldn't move. I saw one of my fellow soldiers run towards me. My eyes closed and I embraced the darkness that came for me. All around me. I still hear guns firing. But it was almost as if I wasn't really there anymore.
