I walked down the hall and to my class. Micah and Dom were already sitting down.

"Soooo, how's the new girl," Micah said

"She's fine, just getting used to everything."

"Can you do something for me?" Dom whispered in my direction.

"Ya man, what's up?"

"Find out if she has someone back home?"

"Why?"

"Because I think I might be into her." How could he be into her? He's never even met her.

"You don't even know her Dom."

"Well, I want to. Just do this for me?"

"Fine," I said and started paying attention to the teacher.

It was about 4 minutes before the bell rang, so I went over to Miss. Martin and showed her my pass.

"Ahh, you must be Ezra. I'm Lucas's mom."

"Nice to meet you, ma'am."

"Oh, are you showing around my daughter?"

"Yes ma'am."

"Wonderful, you're dismissed." I walked out of class a bit confused. This wasn't the woman in Lucas's picture, and she didn't look like either of her kids. I could ask Saylor on our walk to chem.

I found Mr. Drapery's door and knocked. I went in and Saylor was seated next to Vanessa Hudgins. Poor her. Vanessa was a stereotypical head cheerleader and obsessed with any guy who wore a jersey. Vanessa gave me a fake smile while Saylor stood up and walked over to me. We left the class and began our short walk down to Mrs. Cole's room. She didn't initiate a conversation, so I did.

"How was your class?" I said, looking in her direction.

"Fine, I guess." What a boring thing to ask.

The only thing I could respond with was "Good."

I waited for her to say something, but she didn't. I didn't know what to talk about. When we got to the chem lab, I realized I hadn't found a partner yet.

"Want to be lab partners?" I asked, it was a pretty harmless request. She would already know who I was.

Surprisingly she said, "Sure."

"Great." I was excited now, this year just got a lot more interesting. I continued with hope that she would start actually talking to me. "A few things about Mrs. Cole, she's super strict but probably the best teacher in the building. Just don't miss an assignment and you'll be fine."

"How do you know all of these teachers? I mean did you have them before and they just moved up with your grade or what?" I did know all of these teachers and to anyone else, it would look like I'd been held back. I laughed at the thought and answered her.

"Oh, my mom works here. She's one of the secretaries."

"Oh, that makes sense."

"Can I ask you a personal question?" I used her sudden interest in my personal life to get Dom's question out of the way.

"Depends on the question"

"Why did you move here?" It was simple enough to start out with.

"Oh, that's kind of a long story. The short version is that my dad's fiance wanted to move so we did,"

Lucas had already kind of explained it, but he left out anything about a fiance. That would mean Miss. Martin wasn't actually their mom, but their future stepmom.
