When I first left the Hidden Leaf Village almost 6 months ago, I planned to go back... But was eventually dissuaded. Not only did everyone treat Sasuke like a hero when he returned despite all the destruction and pain he caused... Every girl in the village got his love and attention... Every girl, except me. Their flirtatious smiles and soft voices were enough to make Sasuke act like a fool... And it was more than I could take. He had changed. Suddenly, everything had changed.
After about a month away from the village, dedicating all of my time to training, I was ambushed by a group of rogue ninja from the Hidden Mist Village. I tried my best to put up a fight, but their 3-on-1 ambush was more than I could handle at my level of skill. They were just about to kill me, when a sudden flash of light temporarily blinded me. Once my vision cleared up, I saw the three ninja who attacked me were dead... And the person who killed them was none other than Itachi Uchiha. The blood of the fallen shinobi was painted across his face, but he was focusing intently on me. My injuries weren't too severe, but I wouldn't have survived if he hadn't taken me in. He took me back to the Akatsuki's hideout, and let me rest there. After about 2 months I was fully recovered, and ready to start my training again. This time, with Itachi's help.
Of course, I didn't have the power of his Sharingan, but he helped me to improve my overall strength and agility to levels I had never even seen before... To a level that far surpassed any shinobi of the Hidden Leaf Village. So, when I heard Itachi mention something about Leaf shinobi pursuing Naruto... I knew this was my chance to prove my strength against the same people who inspired me to become stronger in the first place. The same people who would be sorry they messed with me.
I couldn't remember the kid's name at first, but once he used that Burning Ash, it came back to me in an instant. Konohamaru. The brat that followed Naruto around like a moth to a flame, and was turning out to be just as irrational and bull-headed as him in his coming of age. After I regained my footing, I couldn't help but notice his first priority being that of Hinata's safety. I smirked and wiped a bead of sweat from my brow.
"You'll never be able to beat me, if you're too busy worrying about her."
He scowled and kept a hand on her shoulder, anticipating my next move.
"Do you think she'd do the same for you? Do you think ANY of the shinobi in that damned Leaf Village would protect YOU with their life?"
I barely noticed the tears forming in my eyes, but they were there, causing the boy to smirk. I clenched my teeth, balling up my fists as he spoke.
"Yes. Yes, I know they would. Just like they did for you... And for Naruto... And Sasuke."
My eyes widened at the mention of his name. Almost on instinct, I lifted my leg and kicked him directly in the ribs, feeling a crack in the bones as he flew up to a branch above us, his spine connecting with the unforgiving wood before I caught him on his way down. His body was going limp, blood coming from his lip as I suspended him in the air by his neck.
"Sasuke? SASUKE?! WHY WOULD SASUKE EVER NEED PROTECTED? THAT SELFISH BASTARD ONLY CARES ABOUT HIMSELF. HE ABANDONED YOU ALL, AND YOU STILL TREAT HIM LIKE A PRODIGAL SON. WHILE... While people like Naruto and I... who were always... ALWAYS THERE..."
I threw the boy into the air, following him up before slamming him back down with my fist, his body crashing to the forest floor with a sickening thud. I landed next to him, the faint sound of his slowing breath the only accompaniment to crickets chirping all around us.
"We cared about that village... Naruto even more than me... And he got the worst of it... You treated us... But mostly him, like pariahs... And expected us to sit back and take it?"
I doubt the boy heard a word I had been saying. His labored breathing, became more and more painful to watch, as he began to cough up blood onto the grass, staining it with his crimson pain.
"Nobody in that village knows true loss. None of them know how hard it is... To be alone... To have people who are supposed to be your friends... Spend all of their time calling you Billboard Brow."
Ino. That bitch. I found myself thinking about her more often than I'd have liked to admit... And it must have been obvious by the look on my face. Obvious enough at least, to drive the nearly dead boy to speak.
"D-don't... Talk... About... Our... Hokage..."
I paused a moment. The wind blowing through the forest causing my robe to open, and my hair to fall out of its ponytail. Hokage? I refused to believe it.
"Did you say..?"
He nodded, trembling as he propped himself up with one arm.
"Yup... Hokage. See? P-people can change for the better instead of for worse... Like you."
He didn't have time to react before I grabbed his neck once again, feeling his dwindling heartbeat against my palm as I brought his ear close to my lips.
"Let's see how much better than me she is when she finds you dead you loudmouth son of a bi-"
