————————————————————————

you were tired.

when spencer leaves for work it's a bit harder for you to get that desired rest you need. you had just become so used to his arms and warmth encompassing you that when you didn't have that, it was more difficult than you thought it'd be to transition. what makes it even worse is that he's normally gone for 3-5 days at a time and gets called out more often than you do. and then, of course, there were your work hours.

your dream was to become a surgeon to save lives, it had been since you were little. so when you were offered a job as head surgeon at the hospital you had been working at for years, you couldn't refuse the offer. you knew the hours would be crazy, but it was a risk you felt you needed to take.

that risk seemed even more dull when you had just returned home after a 38-hour shift. spencer had been gone for 5 days now, and didn't expect to be home for a couple more because of bad weather.

you trudged into your shared apartment, shoulders hanging low from your bag you took with you. the point of the bag was so you could take naps comfortably, having a blanket and pillow with you, but you didn't even have time for that with how crazy it had been. you tossed your bag on the floor, not having the strength or will to put it where it belonged. shaking your jacket off your shoulders, you barely had the strength to hang it up on the hook.

you walked over to the couch, planning on only resting your feet for a minute before you would take a shower and go to bed. in theory, it was a good idea... but it turned out to not work at all. because before you knew it, you were passed out on the couch.

-

upon spencer's arrival, announcing it by shouting his usual, "honey, i'm back," he hung his coat and dropped his bag to make his way to the couch only to find you passed out.

he sat down on the only cushion available beside your head and lifted the top half of your body to rest on his lap. the way you automatically nuzzled into his touch, wrapping your arms around his torso as if he had been there all along, made his heart feel heavy with content. he stroked your hair behind your ears, the corners of your lips twitching upward.

"hi there," he whispered. "long day at work?"

"mhmm," you mumbled against his stomach.

"tired?" he asked, still playing with the locks on your head, he practically had you purring in his lap.

"mhmm," you replied once again, this time a bit longer and drawn out to emphasize how tired you really were.

"when was the last time you had a good nights rest, sweetheart?" he asked, a bit of worry laced in his voice.

"mmmm," you hummed in a way that voiced your confusion.

"how about we get you to bed?" he ran his hands down your arms, sending shivers down your arms.

"mmm?"

"oh right," he chuckled. "you like showering after a long shift. let's get you cleaned up so we can go to bed together, yea?" you finally opened your eyes and looked up at him with a bright smile.

"mmm... i love you," you hummed, pressing a kiss to his clothed stomach.

"i love you, too," he laughed before pressing a kiss to your forehead, moving your body off of him to help you get up. "shower time, honey," he adjusted you to lean against him as he guided you to the bathroom.

while you shrugged off your shirt, spencer untied your new balance sneakers and took them off. then he turned the water to the perfect, skin-burning temperature for after you finished undressing, helping you inside when you were ready. you leaned against the shower wall before he joined you inside, allowing you to rest against his chest as he grabbed your loofa and vanilla scented body wash and began washing your body for you.

your arms were wrapped around his torso the entire time, anchoring him to you as if he could leave you again. you pressed gentle, barely-there kisses to his now bare chest as he worked your coconut conditioner through your hair before guiding you underneath the water to rinse it out. you hummed contently against his chest as he ran his hands through your hair once more.

"hi, spencer," you mumbled against his wet skin.

"hi, y/n," he pressed a kiss to your hairline as you looked up at him with a smile.

"i never said welcome home, so... welcome home," you got on your tip-toes in order to press a kiss to his lips.

"thank you, pumpkin," he smiled against your lips, pressing another kiss to them before reaching around you to turn the water off before grabbing a towel and drying off your hair first, then your body, allowing you to use his shoulders as a crutch to keep you standing.

once you got back into the bedroom, spencer got you one of his shirts to wear to bed along with a pair of your own underwear as he got changed. you wore his clothes all the time, mostly when he was away as an attempt to sleep better. the smell of spencer was always in your apartment, obviously, but having something tangible that he wore constantly was always more comforting to you.

"alright, bed time," he chuckled as he guided you to the bed, tucking you in on your side before he got in, himself.

once you got nuzzled into his chest, you couldn't help but feel a bit guilty.

"i'm sorry," you whispered against his chest quietly.

"what for? you don't need to apologize," he almost chuckled.

"you just got back from a case and you had to take care of me," you mentioned. "i just... i don't understand how you don't think of me as a burden when i can barely sleep without you and need you to take care of me."

"honey, if anything, i feel better when i take care of you. the team just sees me as a child, but you knowing you can count on me to take care of you every once in a while feels nice," he brought his finger up to your chin, lifting your face to his. "i take care of you because i love you, not because i feel as though i have to," he assured before he leaned his head down, placing a gentle kiss to your lips, you smiled against his.

times like these made you wish he was always home, with you. you wanted him to hold you like this more often. you wanted him to kiss you tenderly, not in a rush to leave for work, more often. you just wanted him more often. but you would also take whatever you could get.

"then tomorrow i can take care of you, alright?" you booped his nose, a grin overtaking his face.

"if that's what you want to do, then that's what we'll do," he agreed.

and that's exactly what happened. at least, right after you slept for 13 hours straight.
