Pacific Rim: The Black (Hayley X OC)

Shadow Basin

       I eventually fell asleep. When I came to, the sun had fully risen. The transport rig had automated tinting windows, preventing the full brightness of the sun to reach the inside of the rig. I blinked a few times, then I saw Matthew talking with a little girl in the row ahead of us. Both seemed okay, whereas the boy that sat with the girl was staring out the window. For some odd reason, he seemed familiar to me. He turned around, his face coming into view. I gasped.

       "Taylor? Is that you?" I asked in disbelief. The boy looked at me. His eyes widened.

       "Kai Maverick? I thought you had left on a different rig!" Taylor said. Careful not to bump his little sister, Taylor climbed over the back of his seat. I couldn't resist giving my best friend a hug. During cadet training, we had been placed at random our future co-pilots. That's how many male-female pilots become a couple. At least, that's how Taylor and mine did. Anyway, we had been given the same bunk, which meant we would go through exercises together. At first, we messed with each other, trying to be the toughest. But over time, we grew more and more like brothers, and Matthew a year later had the same relationship with Taylor once he got accepted into the program. His little sister, Hayley, was actually a few months younger than me, but she didn't do the program. (A/N: This is different from the actual series, but I had to change up Hayley's background a little, along with her age for the future plot.) Taylor and I broke the hug, then directed our attention to the window. It was then I realized that the landscape looked kinda familiar. Taylor recognized it as well. "Aren't we near Shadow Basin?"

       "Yeah, we are. But if that's the case, where the heck is it?" Taylor and I kept looking, then Matthew and Hayley took a break from chatting and tapped me on the shoulder. Taking my eyes away from the window, I gave Matthew my full attention. "Hey, Matthew. You doing okay?" My little brother nodded.

       "Yeah. Thanks for letting me use you as a pillow. Surprisingly, I slept better than I did at the Center," he said jokingly. Both me and Taylor chuckled. Suddenly, the rig rapidly moved through the air, Hunter Vertigo setting us down on large rocky ledge. A few people gasped at the sudden movement, but then we heard,

       "Everybody out! Get to the pass!" The driver opened the door, guiding people out. Soon Taylor, Hayley, Matthew, and I are out of the rig and onto the rocky ledge. We start running towards the pass, but then Hayley stopped and yelled,

       "Mom! Dad! LOOK OUT!"

       The white jaeger turned, then two arms graze by Hunter Vertigo's shoulders. They hit the wall of rock that make up the pass, causing several large boulders to fall. Several people screamed, but everyone continued to run. Taylor and I helped a man get up, the poor man twisted his ankle when trying to run. I looked at Taylor.

       "Go! Help Matthew and Hayley get everyone to the pass safely!" I grunted. Taylor shook his head. 

       "No way! We stick together, no matter what!" he shouted back. Another boulder landed, a scream followed its resounding boom. 

       "Taylor, I know that, but we both know that we can help twice as many individually then if we are together. I can take the weight, just go!" I yelled. My friend nodded, finally giving me the man and running ahead to help any others. There's a roar, then a loud metal on metal screech. I turn to see Hunter Vertigo pull one of the Kryo-Cannon's and using it like a club. Adjusting my hold, I manage to lift the man high enough to position him on my back. Sprinting with a full-grown man on my back was excruciating, but I reached the entrance to the pass just as I hear a warhead get launched from the jaeger. The kaiju hits is away, causing the missile to fall tip over booster towards me. It almost seemed like it was approaching in slow-motion, but just as it seemed as if the warhead would hit us, Hunter Vertigo grabbed it, proceeding to thrust it into the kaiju's mouth. It detonated, taking the kaiju's life and the left arm of the white mech. A huge fireball soared into the air, mushroom like, and Hunter Vertigo stood, the remaining Kryo-Cannon deactivating. I set the man down, who thanked me for helping him. I gave him a nod. I spotted Taylor, Hayley, and Matthew instantly, which was a huge relief. At least my friends and my brother were safe. For now.

       After a quick reunion with Taylor and Hayley's parents, who pilot Hunter Vertigo, they lead us to the other side of the basin. They tell us that there should be enough food and water for us until they return with help. It should take only a few weeks, they told us. Before they left, I told the Travis' that I wanted to make the same promise that I made to my parents to them. I would protect Hayley and Taylor like family, making sure that they would be there when they got back. Both of them gratefully accepted, telling me that my parent's would have been very proud of me. It filled me with joy hearing that. Ten minutes later, Taylor, me, Hayley, and Matthew watched Hunter Vertigo walk off in the distance. Hayley sniffled, trying to hold back tears. I pulled her into a hug, Taylor nodding at me as if to say, "Thank you." If there was anything I knew about Taylor and Hayley's parent's it was that they were strong, and both were fighters.

       "They'll be back," I whispered to Hayley, "They always come back."

Comment how you think I did, or if you think that I should add something. There will be a point in time where I will ask for character additions where you make up a character and I put them in the plot.  And before you ask, I do know that this more or less follows the original plot, but there's a reason for that. I want to use the OC's later in the story, which will have to be different than the series. I will add Boy as well because c'mon. It's Boy we're talking about here. The Hayley x OC will be later, once I've set up the main setting.
