Five Years Later...
Matthew POV
The sweat from my brow drops onto the bucket of potatoes in my arms. I dump the contents into the main bucket, adding to the work both my brother, Kyle, or Kai as Taylor calls him, and Taylor have done. I feel happy with the work I've done. Although it's tiring, it helps knowing how many survivors will eat because of our hard work. In the distance, I watch as a group of kids play tag with each other. It's great knowing that even with the kaiju, children still want to have fun.
"Working hard, I see?" someone teases behind me.
"Oh, you know. Just doing the chores that you gave, bro," I reply jokingly.
Behind me, my sixteen year old brother Kyle smiles.
"Yeah, well, good job, anyway. I can't tell you how much it helps around here. It'll be up to you to lead around here someday," Kyle says carefully. I cock an eyebrow.
"What do you mean? It's not like you're going anywhere."
"I mean, just in case. Don't worry, you're right about me not going anywhere. Anyways, thanks for all the help, little bro."
"That's more than I can say for Hayley. She still hasn't done her chores, and I can't find her." Taylor walks up. He's an inch shy of my brother's height, but they both have the same brown hair and blue-green eyes. We both got it from our parents, who also had blue-green eyes. "Do you know where she is?"
"I might. Lemme go and look. Matthew, the rest of the day's yours. See you around, little bro."
"See ya, Kyle. Bye, Taylor," I wave to Taylor. Taylor waves back. I head off, enjoying my hard-earned day.
Kyle POV
I start looking for Hayley. Knowing her, she most likely went to my place. Both her best friend Rosa and her like to poke around in my stuff. Most of the time, I catch them with my old cadet jacket or my leather harness I wear when exploring the basin. After a while, I don't mind them checking it out. If anything, it keeps them busy, which means that they're not getting into trouble. Hayley has gone to the drop-off without telling anyone several times, each time I have to give her the same lecture. I hate doing it, being that I respect the hell out out of her, but I have to keep everyone safe. I walk in the door, hear a giggle, then I see Rosa and Hayley standing in front of my bed. I also see a lump under the blanket.
"Hayley?" I ask.
"I'll catch you later, 'kay?" Rosa says to Hayley. She walks over to me. "Hi Kyle. Bye Kyle." I watch Rosa leave, then walk over to the bed. I gently move Hayley to the side, then pull the blanket back. An old jaeger pilots helmet rests on the bed. I feel my anger rising. This has gone on far enough. "Dammit Hayley!"
"I know, I'm sorry, but before you get mad," I turn and glare at her. "Before you get mad, I found that by the Rim and,"
"You went to the drop-off?!" I ask.
"I was careful! Anyway, I found this, which means there has to be more, maybe even something that can get us out of here!" Hayley argues.
"I promised to take care of you and protect you, not entertain. I'm sorry if that's not good enough for you."
"You don't have to protect me because because nothing ever happens. Nothing ever will happen!"
"We're waiting!"
"No, we're just staying here until we die!"
"We're waiting for your mom and dad, Hayley!"
