"Fallon, phone for you."

Her mother's voice sounded as if it was coming from the other side of the world. When she cracked her eyes open, she realized her mom was standing over her.

            "What?" Fallon mumbled.

"You have a phone call," Gwen said and waved the cordless phone in front of her. "I would've taken a message, but it's almost noon."

Fallon squinted up at her. "It is?"

"Yes, it is," Gwen laughed as she shoved the phone at her.

She waited for her mom to back out of her room and close the door before she took the call. "Hello?"

"You didn't have to take off on me last night."

The sound of Lucian's deep voice sent her heart racing. "How did you get this number?" she asked. "It's not listed."

"I have my ways," he answered.

"You mean you used your powers as the son of the devil," she accused, and Lucian laughed.

"Did Christian Church tell you that?"

"Maybe I heard it from a lot of people."

"Maybe we should talk about this in person."

"What makes you think I want to see you ever again?"

"Just give me a chance to explain. Whatever Christian told you is only half the story."

"Does that mean it's true? You're the son of the devil?"

"We can't talk about this on the phone. Can I just come over?"

"There's no way I'm telling you where I live."

            "Then come to my house."

"No way," Fallon said. "I'm not about to go to the devil's lair or whatever."

Lucian laughed again. "Okay, we can meet at the mall where there are lots of people," he suggested. "Please, Fallon."

The desperation in his voice was beginning to wear her down. "All right," she gave in. "I'll meet you in front of the mall in an hour."

Getting her mom to take her to the mall hadn't been an easy task. Instead of being glad she was making friends, her mom bitched about how she didn't want to spend her precious few days off driving her all over town. If it wasn't for the fact that she really needed a ride, Fallon would've told her not to bother.

As she pulled open the heavy glass door, it occurred to her that she had no idea where to find Lucian. They only said they'd meet at the mall, which turned out to be a freaking mile long. If she had a cell phone, she could just call him. She didn't though, and she was probably the only fifteen-year-old girl on the entire planet that didn't have one. Cell phones were just another of those things they couldn't afford anymore. Suddenly, she spotted Lucian walking toward her as if he'd been expecting her to walk through that door at just that moment. He looked so good in his faded jeans and tight T-shirt. When he got closer she caught the scent of his cologne, and it almost buckled her knees.

"Hey," he said. "I'm glad you didn't bail on me again."

Fallon took a deep breath. "Tell me the truth. Are you the son of Satan or not?"
