Fallon hadn’t been to a school dance before, but the Valentine’s dance was pretty much what she expected. Groups of kids crowded into the stuffy gym that was decorated with red and white crepe paper hearts and matching balloons. Pop music blasted from oversized speakers set up in front of the DJ booth.
While kids jumped and gyrated in the middle of the gym, the teachers patrolled the crowd making sure no one did anything they thought was too inappropriate. Their group didn’t do much dancing. Most of the time they sat on the wooden bleachers and talked about everyone else. Once in a while, the girls would squeal about loving a certain song and would dash off to the dance floor long enough to work up a sweat. Fallon didn’t care if they danced. She was having more fun leaning against Lucian who sat one bench above her and kept his arms around her. Just being with him and being seen with him was as much fun as dancing. Besides, they could dance together anytime they wanted to.
“Like now?” Lucian asked.
Fallon turned to look back at him. “Like now what?”
“Do you want to dance like now?” he joked, and Fallon got to her feet.
With their fingers interlaced, they strolled to the dance floor. When they found an empty spot, Fallon waited for him to start grinding against her. Instead, he reached out to pull her into his arms. They swayed back and forth despite the fast beat and obnoxious bass of the song. As they danced Lucian started to sing.
Fallon stared at him as if she was hypnotized. I could suck on those lips forever, she thought, and he grinned at her.
“What are you thinking about?” she asked.
“What are you thinking about?”
Fallon smiled. “Nothing much.”
“I was thinking we should skip the rest of this dance and go back to my house.”
“Why?”
“So you can suck on my lips forever,” he answered, Fallon’s knees buckled.
“Okay.”
They let go of each other and started for the door. Before they even made it across the gym floor, the girls swooped in on them.
“Come on,” Daphne said, grabbing Fallon by the wrists. “Let’s go to the bathroom.”
Fallon frowned at them. “I don’t have to go to the bathroom.”
“Then come with us,” Corina said.
“What for?” Fallon asked.
Daphne heaved a sigh. “Just come on. Lucian can live without you for a few minutes.”
“Go ahead,” Lucian said. “I’ll wait for you at the bleachers.”
The girls giggled as they dragged her into the bathroom. They didn’t let go of her until they were inside.
“What is with you guys?” Fallon asked.
“There’s this totally cute guy crushing on you,” Daphne answered.
“And she’s not talking about Lucian,” Ava added.
“You must be mistaken,” Fallon informed them.
“No, we’re not,” Corina insisted. “His name is Julian, and he’s a junior on the football team.”
“How do you know?” Fallon asked.
“He told me,” Corina said.
“No, I mean how do you know he likes me?” Fallon clarified.
