“We’re gonna have so much fun,” Corina declared as she led Fallon to her upstairs bedroom.
Fallon still couldn’t believe she was having a sleepover with Corina. The last time she’d been in Corina’s room she’d shown up unannounced with Daphne. Even though that seemed like years ago, she never thought she’d be back for a sleepover.
“You want to make some popcorn?” Corina asked.
“Just because I’m fat doesn’t mean I eat all the time.”
“I wasn’t trying to say that.”
“Sorry, I guess I’m just a little paranoid. I mean, it’s not like we’re best friends or anything.”
“I know, but maybe we could change that.”
“I thought Blair and Laurel were your best friends.”
“Please! I don’t trust those scandalous bitches.”
“Really?”
“Not really. I like them, but I don’t tell them everything.”
“Why not?”
“They’ve been talking a bunch of crap behind my back about me being a slut because I used to date Lucian and now I go out with Griffin. At least sometimes I do.”
“How come you want to date him anyway?”
“At first, I just wanted a boyfriend. Lucian was the last guy I dated, and I was lonely so ”
“So you picked the guy that looked just like Lucian.”
“I picked the guy that would make my mom happy.”
Fallon drew her eyebrows together. “What do you mean?”
“My mom loved it when I dated Lucian. She was totally thrilled we were together because she thought we’d be together forever and I could rule Hell with him. That’s the only reason I went after him after he dumped me.”
“How come you guys broke up?”
“He said he didn’t feel anything for me.”
“So you went after Griffin to make your mom happy?”
“After Lucian picked you as his soul mate, I figured I didn’t have a choice.”
“You mean you don’t even like him?”
“I like him a lot. I just don’t like him using me for sex.”
“How’s that been working out? Have you been telling him no?”
Corina laughed. “Yeah, and he calls me now more than he ever did before. I guess you were right,” she said. Her cell phone rang, and she frowned at it as she plucked it from the night stand. “Speak of the devil’s son.”
“Don’t answer it if you don’t want,” Fallon suggested.
“I’ll just be a second,” Corina promised. “Hey, Griff, what’s up? Oh, I can’t tonight. Because I have a friend over. What difference does it make what friend? It’s Fallon. Yes, your brother’s soul mate Fallon. We’re gonna hang out and do girl stuff so I guess you’ll have to beat off again tonight. Later.”
When she hung up the phone both girls stared at each other for a second and then burst into peals of laughter. Fallon could just picture the look on Griffin’s face, and that made her laugh even harder. For the first time since she accepted the invitation, she decided they were going to have fun after all.
Monday morning Fallon sat in English class bored to death. Mrs. Laird was trying to teach them the concept of irony and how it was used in literature. She was using that crappy Steinbeck book Of Mice and Men to make her point. Wasn’t it ironic George killed his best friend Lenny? Fallon thought it was more like it was twisted and sick. Besides, she didn’t need to find irony in literature to understand what it meant. Her life was steeped in irony. Isn’t it ironic Christians claimed to be so forgiving, but they didn’t want her to be Lucian’s soul mate? Isn’t it ironic that Jesus was supposed to be this accepting guy, but he wouldn’t accept her father into Heaven just because of one mistake he made? Isn’t it ironic that she used to be best friends with a Jesus freak who ended up trying to exorcise her?
