1989- Derry"Why would a new girl come in the middle of the year? Let alone... a Friday?"
Little Clare was chewing on her peanut butter sandwich at recess time under the tree, beside her best friend, Erin. Their other best friend, Orla, climbed the tree above them.
"Orla! Out of the tree! I'm not going to ask you again!! You are what- nine years old? Quit acting five!" The sister on yard duty marched over to the trio, and Orla dropped out of the tree.
"I don't know." Erin said. It was a Thursday afternoon, and this so- called 'new girl' was coming tomorrow.
"I think...maybe we should invite her into our group." Clare mumbled.
"I second that." Orla said, plopping down beside her cousin, stealing a crisp out of her bag.
"Guys! What if she's... like...annoying! Or even worse- rude! Why don't we see how she is first? Then we decide." Erin groaned.
"My Mammy says we need to be kind to everyone. That's what Jesus did."
"Jesus was wrong." Erin mumbled.
"Jesus was never wrong." Orla added, matter-of- factly.
"Fine! We'll ask her to be friends. But it doesn't mean I'm going to like it." Erin said, crunching extra loudly on a crisp.
Clare giggled with excitement, high-fiving Orla.

Erin, French braids with ribbons down each side of her shoulders, marched down the hallway beside Orla and Clare early the next morning, knowing they'd find the new girl in the classroom alone with the teacher.
Standing up on her tippy-toes to peak through the window of the class door, Erin tried to grab a look of the girl.
"I see her!"
"Let me see!" Clare said, shoving Erin away, but quickly finding that she was too short to reach the window anyways.
"I'll just..describe her with my amazing use of words. She's got... curly brown hair, she's as tall as me, maybe, and... is she chewing gum?" Erin scoffed.
Suddenly, the curly haired girl caught a glance of the girls staring at her through the window, and Erin ducked as fast as she could.
Orla, on the other hand, waved at her, and didn't try to hide the fact that she was spying on her.
