Chapter 9

"Good morning!" Kokoa greeted me as she sits on the chair in front of me.

Auntie made an orange juice for the three of us and a hot chocolate, too. I woke up early to bake cookies and to prepare my things.

Hua called me early in the morning if I will come to school but as Jihoon told me that there are no classes for today, I did not go to school and instead did some household chores to help auntie.

It is the day that Hua will also be busy because they will have visitors from the other city. Even though I want to give her some cookies today, I might give her tomorrow since it's Saturday.

"Good morning. Eat all you want, Kokoa." I teased her and she smiled.

"So how's the food last night?" I raised the question to Kokoa and auntie who is busy washing the pan she used earlier.

Auntie looked at me and a warm smile appeared on her face.

"Do you want to ask that? We all loved it."

Kokoa made a thumbs up because she can't talk. Her mouth is full of food and on her right hand, there is a glass of orange juice.

"And oh, I am glad that you and Jihoon talked last night. His parents shared to me that the both of you are not interacting in school for the past few months."

"Where did they get the information, auntie?" the hot coffee I made is now gone.

"Jihoon explained it to them because they are not seeing you coming here. And Mrs. Park told me that you did not teach her some of your recipes." Auntie uttered.

Maybe I can teach Mrs. Park now, at least.

"By the way, there is a coffee shop nearby and they need a staff member. I applied and I got accepted last week." I shared with them while I turned on my phone.

"Why did you apply?" Auntie washed her hands and looked at me intensely.

"I want to work and at least help you here, to pay the bills since I will stay for long until I graduate. I don't want to be bothersome for both of you and Hiroshi." Auntie sighed and sat beside me.

"I know where you're coming from, Lilac. I am working and I know that I can pay for the bills. Yes, Hiroshi has his house downtown and spends a lot but he still gives us enough to support Kokoa and you to continue your studies."

Kokoa nods as a sign of agreement to her mother. I know how difficult for Hiroshi to study and manage his business at the same time, and finding a job would be beneficial since I will be able to help auntie and Kokoa.

"Auntie, don't worry too much. I will work for about two weeks there and nothing else."

"Does Hiroshi know about this?" Kokoa asked as she sipped on her orange juice.

"Not yet." I sighed.

"Call him later and make sure that it is just two weeks, Lilac." Kokoa showed her phone and waved it to me to make sure that I will call Hiroshi later.

My eyes widen because I forgot to call him!

"It's Hiroshi's fifth competition today!" Kokoa was also surprised and auntie gets her phone in her room to call his son.

As I saw my phone, there are four missed calls from Hiroshi, and three unread messages from him. Hua has one missed call and four unread messages. There are unknown numbers and I ignored them all.

It's eight o'clock in the morning and one hour to go before the competition starts. I dialed Hiroshi's number and on the second ring, he answered it.

"Good morning, I'm sorry I forgot to call you," I said as I bit my lower lip.
