-Fenrys-

"I have guards on all corners of the estate. I had three stationed by Darrow's room. No one should have been able to break in. Why didn't they just kill me while they were here? It would have been smarter. The—"

"What did the note say," he interrupted her rambling.

Evangeline broke eye contact and stared at her bowl."It was soaked with blood. I couldn't read it."

Fenrys glared at her from across the breakfast table. "I know you better than you think. Stop lying to me."

Evangeline recoiled from being called out and mumbled, "It said they know what I've done."

"What exactly have you done, Evangeline? These assassin attacks aren't random, are they? No other Lord or Lady has been targeted. So what have you done to anger them?"

She glared right back at him, "To them personally, nothing. I've done other things to other people."

What things? "It has something to do with the hellfire in your room, doesn't it."

Evangeline clutched her teeth, "So what if it does? What are you going to do about it?"

"Why can't you just tell me what you've done?!" Fenrys stood and slammed his hands on the table. His yelling seemed to shake the room.

She got up from her seat, obviously not enjoying the uneven playing ground, and yelled back at him, "Because I am ashamed!"

"Of what?! Let me help you get through it! I love you and want to help you."

Evangeline froze and blinked at him. "You-You love me?"

"I thought I did last night, but now I'm not sure I could love someone who keeps secrets and lies," Each word was laced with venom and struck where he attended.

He never regretted his words as much as he did now as tears formed in her eyes. "I did an awful thing and want to bury it in the past. The court has never asked these questions so why must you? Why can't you just let me keep my secret?"

"Assassins just killed Darrow because of something you did! Because I hate to see you suffer alone," he admitted, "Just tell me your secret. I won't tell the court."

A tear streamed down her cheek, "The thing about secrets, Fenrys. Is that they only grow." Evangeline wiped the tear and another one formed. "I know and so does the Assassin's Guild, and I'm going to do my best to not let anyone else find out."

Fenrys scoffed, "So your choosing to alone."

"I am." Those words we're like a blade to his stomach. Actually a blade would hurt less.

"If that's how you feel than I'm going back to Orynth and letting you deal with your own mess."

"The assassins have already broken into Arran estate once. They can do it again, and this time I'll die. I'm going with you to Orynth. You just have to protect me for a couple more hours and I'll be at the place with Aelin and Rowan to watch me. Then you can forget all about me." Like he could forget about her. She was everything. Evangeline was beautiful inside and out. She understood him in most ways others did not. He knew that she loved him, and when she realized it and decides to trust him, Fenrys would be ready. But for now, he will be petty, because she needed to come to him.
