Will's P.O.V
"I don't understand how I lost! I even went to school and got a great job." I complained loudly to Nico.
He chuckled before replying. "Yeah, well school isn't everything."
"Yeah, but I had to pay for two kids, do you know how expensive that is?"
"But wasn't it worth it to send them to that camp that they loved?" Nico teased.
"Nico, they're not real, how are they supposed to enjoy it? They're just tiny pieces with no legs!" I laughed.
Nico's eyes clouded for a minute before refocusing on me. "When you grow up, do you want to have kids?"
My eyes widened in surprise. "Woah, where did that come from?"
"I was just thinking..." Nico trailed off.
"Well, I like the idea of being able to look after them and nurture them, but at the same time, it would crush me to see them going through tough times. Plus, with our whole 'demigodliness', how would I be able to protect them? If something ever happened to them, I don't know what I'd do..."
Nico thought for a minute. "But wouldn't it be worth it?"
"Be worth what?" I asked, curious.
"Wouldn't the tough times be worth it if you also got to be there for the good times? I mean, yes, it would be hard to watch your child getting bullied or something, but wouldn't it be that much better to help them find the courage and confidence to fight back?" Nico's voice held a certain undercurrent that I wasn't too sure of. It almost felt like he wasn't referring to the child anymore...
I smiled, seeing things from his point of view. "That's a good way to look at it."
"It's just, I wouldn't want to give up on someone..." Nico avoided my gaze.
"Is this about-"
"-Anyways," Nico interrupted, "why don't we finish cleaning up the board?"
"Sure." I replied, curious as to why he changed the subject so fast, but didn't push because I didn't want him to feel uncomfortable.
The board had been dissembled to a soundtrack from All time low. It was amusing watching Nico's nose scrunch up at the start of the loud song, but by the end he was bobbing his head along to the music. I was gradually adding to his music variety, making a slash of pride run through my chest. It wasn't even about the music, it was the fact that Nico was able to change his view so easily. I knew the fatal flaw of the children of hades was holding a grudge, but given time, Nico would be able to overcome his flaw. He used to just throw on a mask to cover his problems, but now he's been able to take off his mask and face his problems. I find that very courageous, since Nico had Olympian-sized problems.
"Will," Nico yawned, "what time is it?"
I had the urge to yell 'summer time' like they do in high school musical, but I didn't think Nico would get the reference. "Seven, why didn't you just look at the clock on the wall?"
"Too tired." Nico smiled lazily back at me.
"Why don't you get some sleep, and then tomorrow we can get you situated back in your own cabin?" I suggested, as I picked up the game box.
"Oh..." Nico replied, a little sadness hidden in his sleepy tone.
"What, don't you want to go back to your cabin?" I asked, watching closely for his reaction.
"I guess so, but I think I'm starting to be more comfortable here."
I raised my eyebrows. "But your cabin is supposed to be designed specially for you, don't you like your cabin?"
"My cabin's alright, but it can be a bit lonely sometimes." Nico rubbed his eyes and I knew he wouldn't be telling me this if he wasn't sleepy.
Not wanting to invade his private thoughts, I tried to end the conversation. "I'll make sure to visit you a lot, now get some sleep, you'll need your energy tomorrow."
"Alright, and Will?"
I put on a smile. "Yeah?"
"Thanks... For everything." Nico's eyes twinkled like the candles on a birthday cake just before they got blown out.
Not really knowing how to reply, I simply smiled. Nico snuggled down lower into the castle of blankets that seem to have multiplied over his stay in the infirmary. Once again, I was comparing him to a deer as they settled in for a rest. His delicate features seemed to soften even more as his breathing evened out, and that's when I knew I'd been standing there just a bit too long to be considered platonic. I gazed one last time at his sleeping form before turning to the door. Only, I didn't see the door. Standing there was my sister Grace.
"Have you told him how you feel yet?" She smiled like the Cheshire Cat."Not exactly..." I switched the game board into my other hand.
Grace toned down her smile a bit. "Oh, based on how you act together, I would have thought you two were a couple."
"No, I don't think Nico's quite ready for that yet." I replied, a sad smile on my face.
"Will! Do you pay attention at all? Nico was basically admitting his feelings for you!" Grace put her hands on her hips.
I turned back to face the sleeping beauty. "I think he was just tired. He may say that he's ready, but deep down, I think the idea of being with a boy, or with anyone, still freaks him out a bit."
"Well, you know him best, but when the time comes, don't be afraid to show him how you feel." Grace gave me a look, letting me know that she knew more than she was letting on.
"What aren't you telling me?" I raised my eyebrow and my voice.
"Shh! Come outside and I'll explain." Grace grabbed my hand and guided me out the door. "Alright, so there's been a lot of talk in the cabin lately about you... And Nico. Some people think you're taking advantage of his physical weakness and keeping him in the infirmary. I think Brett's the one spreading the rumours but I can't be too sure. Although some people believe him, the number that disagrees is much higher. A lot of people think you and Nico would be cute together, and I think it's making Brett upset."
"What do you think he's going to do?" I asked, a little worried.
"It's not what I think, it's what I know." Grace put her hand on my shoulder. "Will, Brett is asking Nico out at the end of the week."
